I think Santa is gonna bring me the Carl Goldberg 10-300 ARF for Christmas. I was planning originally putting a 1.20 in it, but I would really like to put a gas engine if possible because I would like to try a smoke system.
I have read and heard that if you do smoke, that gas is the way to go. Is this too much to ask of this plane, or is it a good idea?
This would be the biggest plane I have owned so I have no experience with anything bigger than a .46 2 stroke.
Thanks to all who reply,
Merry Christmas!!

Stick with the 120, rather than a gas engine. The Ultimate is a lightweight plane that probably wouldn't do as well with even the smallent and lightest gas engines.
Who said "gas is the only way to go with smoke"? Several popular smoke systems can be successfully used with 2 and 4 cycle glow engines, But, remember the extra weight of the smoke fluid and pump, batteries, etc. That'll mean lower levels of performance on an otherwise great flying model.

Agreed. By the time you add the extra weight of a gasser AND the weight of a smoke system, your plane is gonna fly like a tank. Smoke will, however, work well with a good 4 stroker of the appropriate size for that plane. Just use a good commercially available smoke fluid .

Thanks guys,
You have given me bad news, but I will stick with your advice. If I were to say, go with 1.20 and also do a smoke system, could you recommend a smoke system that would work well?
I figured the system would add more weight, as would the gas engine. I was just curious if it could handle it. I don't do much 3d stuff. I am in to more scale like aerobatics.
Again, thank you for you replies!

Some have had sucess with the RCS140 from www.rcshowcase.com. It is a light motor, but again, you want to keep it light.

If your heart is set on trying a gas engine consider this one:

Supposedly weighs 37 oz. with ignition and pitts muffler (only 5 oz. more than an O.S. 120 Surpass III pumped) and turns an APC 16x8 at 8400 rpm. And it looks good, too!

Maybe I should just forget about the smoke. I have flown one before without, and she was too sweet.
I really don't want to compromise how well it flies by loading it down with a bunch of heavy stuff.
I think I'll just go with the 1.20 and and be safe.
Thanks for youe replies!!

Are you talking 1.20 2c or 4c? As far as 2c is concerned, use a .90. Most .90's are in .60 size cases and the less weight the better. For a 4c, then yes the 1.20 is the way to go. I have 2 Ultimates, I HAD an ASP 1.20 2c in one for a short time. It was heavy and not worth the extra weight. Most guys are flying them with ST .90's and OS .91's. Another good choice is the Webra .91 P-5. The RCS 1.40 for gas might be an option. I tried a Maloney 1.00 gasser for kicks, flew it 1 time (yes it actually flew!) and that was enough.
