Couldn't take it any longer. I had to spend Christmas money. I purchased a Phoenix Models 40 sized Giles 202 ( not Cap) and now need to put an engine in it. I have been flying for about 5 years and consider me a intermediate pilot. I realize thiis is not a 3 D plane, but want it to perform its best. Please help me with your opinions. I know you may have other engines you prefer, but I am not buying another engine. (At least that's what I keep telling my wife.) These are the engine I have without airframes.
OS 70 Surpass
Saito 91
Saito 72
Magnum 61
YS 53
YS 63
OS 120 III pump ( yeah right)
Got a few 2 strokes as well.
Magnum .40
TT .46
Keep in mind, I dont want it to be so heavy it would fly like a brick.

I have no experience with that plane in particular, but I can tell you that most 40 size planes fly very well on a Saito 72. Some even do well on a Saito 91. If it were mine I'd give the Saito 72 or the YS63 thefirst try and then go to the 91 if you need more power. The other way to determine which engine, lucky for you you've got a nice selection of engines to choose from, is to build the plane and then see which engine helps to get the correct balance.

I don't think the magnum 61 will be enough. I had the Saito 72 on the Phoenix Sukhoi and felt a little more power would help. I would start with the Saito 72 or YS 63, then if that is not enough go with the Saito 91. Good luck!

Im running the ys in a pheonix sukhoi. its puuurfect. plenty of power. I added 4 oz bigger tank and can fly 11-13 minutes. It can be very fast at full throttle but it flys well at @ 8500-9000rpm w a 12-6 prop 30% fuel fully inverted.

Try the YS 63 and I think you will strike a nice balance. These planes are a bit heavy in the wing loading. Keep it light. The 63 should give you plenty of performance. If not satisfied, go with the Saito 72. IMHO the 91 will be too much for this airframe. I have the Giles with a Mag XLS 52 and it grooves pretty good. Good luck!

Which YS63 or 53?
I am leaning toward either of the YS's. Doubt there is much difference in their weights. Forgot to mention I have a Saito 56 as well. This may lightn the frame up more. Not sure which of them is the lightest.
I've ruled out the .91. I've got 3D planes for that. Not sure if the control surfaces are big enough for serious 3D anyway. I've ruled out the 2 strokes as well. Don't believe they'll give me the pow seek.
I've started to build it and must say of all the ARF I have seen, this one is really nice. Gotta do something with the engine mount. It is mounted for a 2 stroke in a 45 degree aspect. Looks like an inverted job for the 4 strokes. May be difficult to find the center of the firewall. Hopefully the screws on the mount are parralel.

I have the giles but have not assemblrd it. On the sukhoi the mount is not preinstalled so i went with a fully inverted setup so that i could avoid lateral balance issues.Once its dialed in the YS has NO problem running inverted. I had installed a glow driver prior to running the motor and found the glow ignitor was only usefull for starting. I may remove it and use it on another plane as the sukhoi is no lightweight. If i were setting up the giles with the ys id go inverted because the pump keeps the motor going regardless of tank centerline issues. The sukhoi has the standard battery under the tank the reciever and glow battery under and just forward of the servos. I installes a 12 oz tank and it is more than enough as our field is small and the plane is fast. The plane is on the forward cg mark. she starts off a little nose heavy but comes alive as i use up some fuel. works for me.
I let one of the local pros fly her and he felt the combination was perfect. all the power you could reasonably use. Sounds good too!
Its not a 3d plane but its a nice steady flier, does what ya tell her to. Oh did i mention they look awesome. This has got to be one of the best deals in an arf. Especially at the 79$ i got it for.

I am planning on getting the Giles myself and plan to use the YS 63, The Saito 72 is lighter but the YS63 is more powerful and mine was mounted inverted with no issues what so ever. So my vote is for the YS 63FZ

The sweetest running engine I have. The only other mods I performed was a pull pull cable on the rudder and a push push on the elevator, probably just overkill on my part. I did increase the tank size 4 oz, the stock tank should run 7-10 minutes. Ive gone up to 14 minutes and never deadsticked.
