Default Sprtsman Waco 30 CG

I flew my waco today for the first time. I almost lost it on the first take off due to low speed. I have a Magnum 30 4 stroke and all the servos are HS81. My question is for those of you who have this plane where did you set the CG. I did mine base on the manual and had to add 9oz of dead weight to the front of it to get the CG to balance. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong here. If I have to add this much weight to it I might as well put a bigger engine in it. My second question is how big of engine can be used without having to do too much modification?

Thanks
Barry

I believe it was 20mm in front of the leading edge on the bottom wing, I used a 40 4-stroke and it balenced really well.

I know the CG is 20mm in front of the lower wing and 64mm from the bottom. But my question is why I had to add 9oz to front of the plane to balance it. This is an ARF and the engine is the Magnum 30 which is recommended. 9oz is almost the weight of the engine (engine is 9.6oz). Did you guys had to add this much weight with yours?

Thanks
Barry
