Default Dago RED WM What engine?

I really like the WM DAGO RED. Thinking very hard about getting one... Not going to race but want to make it very fas,t but not real heavy by overloading it with motor... What are some of the fastest 45's out there... Also what is everyone else using? Would a 4 stroke be better?

I have the WM Yellow Rockwell Mustang which is essentially the same as Dago Red with a Saito 72. It is pretty fast and flys well. Some guys on here put 91, 100, or 1.2 Saito 4 stroke and they must be REALLY fast. But they also have much higher wing loading, etc with those engines. Mine is good though with the Saito 72. I say use that engine. To me, a 2 stroke sound just doesn't seem right on a warbird or a Reno Racer type plane. If you want 2 stroke you can go 46 size, Irvine 53 or any number of similar 2 strokes. Do a search for the Dago Red here and you will find lots of hits and info.

I've had two of these and built a couple for my friends. My first one had a G90 in it mounted sideways and my other one which I maidened a couple weeks ago has an inverted Saito 100. Very Hot! The other two I built had 61fxs sideways in them. I suggest a minimum of a Saito 91 or 61fx

The new YS110 slots straight into the model and, believe it or not, balances perfectly without any extra weight.

Fast! with a 12x10 prop.

Flies like it's on rails too!

I own Saito / OS / Magnum motors... Never had a YS budget thing... ) How much more work is it with the Presurized system? Hany harder to get it tuned and set-up? 110 YS how much reenforcing did you do to the firewall and wings? We are talking about the WM 40 Dago Red. Thing must screeeeeeeeeem with that motor!
Just finishing my GEE BEE was picking up a few things at the hobby shop and Saw the DAGO RED sitting up there calling to me... Every time I walk in there I have to look up at it! Man do I want that plane... Will have the cash on the 14th of april, BIG BONUS coming at work!!! I have a GP Shoestring already, it has a TT Pro 61 in it and it's pretty fast but not extreme. Want this one to be faster...

I always bind the tank with tape (probably not necessary, but it allows me to sleep at night!) and use zip ties on all the fuel line joints, but apart from that the pressure system actually helps as you don't have to bother about where the tank is positioned. My YS110 was tuned exactly right after a few minutes adjustment, and I haven't touched it since.

And yes, it screeeems!

The 110 WM warbirds at our field are fast, huh David?!! We are spoiled with getting to watch those guys really tear it up. There are some with the 140 and 120s on them too. It makes the 91 s or the 110s look like they are dead sticked! Really nice looking when in formation. I don't think you would be dissapointed!

Yes, and all those that fly in formation are a lot better pilots than me! Maybe one day I might risk following them round!

I set one up with a YS 110 and you need to put in a larger tank. I hogged out the opening in the bulkhead over the wing and moved it back closer to the CG. The distance doesn't matter because of the built in pump on the YS. You also need a Tru Turn adapter to make the spinner fit the YS and a bolt to replace the existing one. Also put the battery back behind the cockpit and it balances fine. This things slows down and just doesn't want to tip stall.

I can't believe David C. said, "it fly's like it's on rails". It does but I would never say it on the forums.

Yes, but I didn't say where those rails end up.

Nemesis - its up to you and what you want, how fast is fast? Also do you want to sacrifice wing loading? I think a 2 stroke with pitts muffler is nice, love the sound of a screaming 2 stroke. Try something fast like a Rossi 53, you will not be sacrificing wing loading if you were to go for something like a 61FX.

I have a friend who just put a saito 82a fs in his and flys great. Did change the foam tires to hard rubber. Only time he has a problem is when the grass gets a little long. He usually fly it when grass has been fresh cut. (Small wheels). Great plane and flys great too.

Will be a good combo. Buddy here has the Dago with a 61fx in it and an 11/7 apc.

Got a Saito .72 in my Dago... Goes good but not as fast as I want... I am thinking seriously of a Satio 100 or YS 110.
Plane flys great and looks good... Great plane

I have a YS110 in mine (spinning a 12x10 prop) and it is the perfect fit if you want speed and flexibility. It bolts straight into the space available, and does not require any extra weight at the tail to get the balance correct.

An awesome match!

I've got one with a Webra .50 and Ultra Thrust muffler. A nice flying airplane! Speed is not bad, but I'm thinking seriously of a bit more power...

Yes the Dago Red / YS110 pairing is the most popular one where I fly, and speeds of over 140 mph have been clocked by a couple of them. What's amazing is it floats almost like a trainer on landing (in fact, if anything, it won't come down!) and flies like its on rails.

The only problem i have with it is, things happen very quickly when flying it, and it becomes a dot in the sky very quickly!

I have the Saito 100 in the little WM P-51. Its a hot one running a 12/12apc keeping within the rpm limits--FYI. Thing is its a bit of a ground handling pain. Take off is rough compared to the other I had with a G90.
The plane is so light and small that the idle has to be darn near off so that the plane does not zip off around the runway. I thought it would have been a great idea but I am slowly regretting it. A Saito 91 probably would have been a smarter route
