RE: Carl Goldberg -- PITTS S12 MONSTER
Okay, here's some pics of my motor. Have some more pics in the motor forum soon for some help on converting the Walbro over to RC operation.
Chris, great idea's on lighting the plane. Doubt I can use some of them but will do most everything I can to reduce the weight.

Not to get off track, but I have a quick question. Has anyone thought about adding a dummy radial inside the cowl? ....and would it interfere with the cooling if one were to do so?

RE: Carl Goldberg -- PITTS S12 MONSTER
If done properly, it could actually help cooling by acting as a duct for the air flow. Sure would look good! [8D]
I started working on mine yesterday and see that the G26 is going to fit well with just the plug and plug wire sticking out of the cowl as well as the exhaust stack(s) of course. I have not decided on if I'll use a Slimline pitts or Abell muffler yet. My airfield is not subject to noise restrictions so I don't need to worry about keeping it too quiet.

Just to let you guys know, I'm selling mine. Need the funds to complete some other airplanes and this one is on the chopping block. I hate to sell it cause I really like the plane, but I just cant justify all these planes.

RE: Carl Goldberg -- PITTS S12 MONSTER
Well I finally got to really fly the Pitts this Sunday. After some early morning set backs (forgot to locktite the nuts on the aileron clevises, oops) I got two flights in where I could run the engine a little leaner.
I was running the 1.60 at ~400 below peak on the Mejlik 18x8. With that prop it pretty much leaps into the air at half throttle. Once I was about a foot off the runway and just past the halfway point I firewalled it and started a vertical climb that looked like it could have gone on forever. Once I get this thing done breaking in and can run it at its peaked settings I think it's going to be a monster.
As far as C.G., I didn't really check too much. A quick inverted jaunt seemed to indicate hands off flight with the C.G. about 1/2 inch behind the forward limit. If that holds in future tests I'll leave it alone. I don't like holding up elevator while inverted; my brain starts to short-circiut.
Knife edge coupling is pronounced. I still need to do a lateral balance (I know I'm lazy...) and send CG an email to ask about proper incidences. If those fail to help much I'll have to mix it out. It would be nice to do some huge knife edge loops.
Elevator on low rates generates a small amount of roll coupling. This is both my lack of lateral balance and the asymmetric throw of the elevator halves. Once I balance I'll mix out the remaining coupling.
Just a recap of the setup for those interested:
O.S. 1.60 w/ Perry Pump.
Mejlik 18x8
Slimline smoke muffler (no smoke yet).
16oz Sullivan tank pushed against firewall (8min flights with mixed throttle usage eats just over half of tank).
2700 mah NiMH under turtle deck right in front of rudder.
HS-525's on the ailerons.
HS-85MG on throttle (mounted to outside bottom of engine box).
HS-5625 on the elevator (stock split pushrod setup, yes it flexes a bit ).
HS-5645 on the rudder.
Sorry, I don't know the all up weight.
Some day I'll move the elevator servo back and add one for the other side, but for now I'm just going to fly Plus, I have a Top-Flite Sea Fury I was supposed to finish about a year and a half ago... to many projects.
Scott.

RE: Carl Goldberg -- PITTS S12 MONSTER
You guys need to Super Size it and get a big one! I built the 35% version and she flies like a dream.
I thought that everyone might be interested in a scale logo that you could add to your SMALL (he he)12. Below you will find a "Monster" logo with a flying bull dog. I got this from the owner of the full scale version of mine. He is placing this graphic on the cowl about where the CG logo is on yours.

RE: Carl Goldberg -- PITTS S12 MONSTER
You are welcome. I have also made cockpit kits for the M12. They fit the large 35% like mine and the 1/8 scale like yours (I have one too). Here are a few pix. I'm sure I could modify the bigger 35% kit to work on this new CG version. If anyone is interested in one of these send me a direct e-mail ([email protected]). These cockpit images are all a illustrated photo retouching process using 30 or 40 different photos and illustrating them together. the challenge is to make the flat print look like it has perspective or depth. they took a long time to create.
The first is the bigger one that could work on the CG version. The floor graphic/photo looks like you are viewing the inside of the fuse and the instrument panels are flat prints to be mounted to a balsa dash. This is all very light weight.
The second cockpit is for the 1/8 scale M12 and includes a 3D paper dash board. It weights practically nothing.
I also have a dummy radial engine kit for both.

Kregg, loved your work on the Pitts M12 on RCG's real McCoy thread and various others. I was just thinking about contacting you to see if you could do them for the CGP model. I'll be intouch as I start getting it together. Still have a while yet. Great product guys if you've not seen them on planes.

I think Tram is doing one with the saito 1.20. The only one I have read that is flying has a 1.60 in it and does quite well.
Cadconverions is doing the roto 35 and I have a 2.4 lying around for mine. These are still very new on the market so you won't have many flying yet.

As snap said, I have a roto35 and plan to put that in the plane. I also have a NIB Os 1.2 pumped motor that I thought about starting out with and then put the larger motor in the plane once I'm use to it. I think the plane is a little too heavy for just a 1.2 but Tram should know shortly.

RE: Carl Goldberg -- PITTS S12 MONSTER
Thanks, I am sure that it will also depend on the "type" of flying that is intended too.
I am basically only after a decent flying plane with the ability to do basic aerobatics....not really interested in 3-D type of stuff, or anything like that.
I will await his flight report before I start the plane......Thanks again

RE: Carl Goldberg -- PITTS S12 MONSTER
Just flew mine again with the O.S. 1.60 today. I really like the combo. Vertical seems unlimited and the 1.60 runs and starts great (I'm still taking it easy on the new motor). This is the first one of the engines I have owned and I can see why everyone loves them.
Also, the 1.60 fits completely in the cowl. No need to cut out holes for valve covers. I cut a hole for the glow plug and a long slot for the slimline exhaust stingers.
Scott.

So Scott, with a 1.6 2-stroke you're really putting the juice to the plane. I keep thinking that my roto35 is going to be too much motor for the plane. Been researching putting something like a MVVS 1.6 in the pitts and pick up a DP Edge 540T for the roto35. My mind is hurting with all of this thinking....

BTW, if money didn't matter and you had to install a gas motor in the Pitts.. what would any of you put in? Must be electronic ignition.

CAD, you're going to get a different answer from almost anyone you ask. Go with something that has enough thrust to fly the plane the way you want to fly. I've decided on my engine and no one can make me change my mind. If it doesn't work out then it will be on me but past experience with the same engine on a like plane tells me my engine choice is going to work well. I suspect there are several that will work well and soon there will be a lot of happy people running all types of engines on this plane. Just remember... upright level flight is prohibited and displays a bad attitude

RE: Carl Goldberg -- PITTS S12 MONSTER
Thanks Alan, I've discovered that the glow/gas guys are 20x worse than us "mostly" electric guys. We gotta have 2:1 thrust to weight ratio and the glow/gas guys want 4:1
The weight of the roto 35vi is my concern but let me run some numbers by everyone and see if I'm making sense...
Looking at the DP Edge 540T:
1200 Sq In of wingarea (8.3333 Sq Ft) at min of 12.6 lbs for a wingloading of 24.19 oz / sq ft
1200 Sq In of wingarea (8.3333 Sq Ft) at max of 15 lbs for a wingloading of 28.8 oz / sq ft
To get the pitts with the same wing loading the weight can be as much as below:
24.19 oz/sq ft the weight of the pitts has to be 11.43 lbs (a litte above the min. weight given)
28.8 oz/sq ft the weight of the pitts can't exceed 13.61 lbs.
My target weight with the roto is around 13.25 lbs (1lb heavier than the highest weight) for a wing loading of: 28.03 oz/ sq ft. Should be more than doable and fly fine. Anyone else following me or am I nuts?
Is there something that's more important than having a lot of power and a reasonable wingloading? I just hate to build the plane, mod it to move the servos to the rear, and then not like the plane with that motor. It's a lot easier to swap out a GWS stickmount gearbox than an entire motor and servos.
Someone shoot me!
Kevin

RE: Carl Goldberg -- PITTS S12 MONSTER
BANG!!!!
Go with the roto. I do not think a smaller gasser will work the same as the smaller nitro engines on this plane. Besides I don't want to be the first . I have been looking at mine, and I know the structure will handle it but the wing cord seems to be a little narrower than my lanier pitts was at 60" so it will fly slightly heavier.
I hate to go nitro, cost to much for fuel the way I fly them and the clean up sucks.
Oh well. I will set it up and see, hope to start next month after finishing my two projects on hand. So get yours done with the ROTO and let us know how it works....

RE: Carl Goldberg -- PITTS S12 MONSTER
Ouch, I really didn't mean to shoot me... Okay, I did.
Been thinking about the MVVS 1.6 for a lighter weight motor for the pitts and then put the roto35 in a slightly larger but less dragy airframe and have two gassers.
I think I'll start with the roto 35 - If I like it then I'll but another motor for the larger gas plane I'm looking at. If I don't like it, I'll buy a smaller gas motor for the Pitts (less weight) and put the roto in a larger plane.
I hate making decisions. I'm just about to a point where I can start the pitts. I have all of my digital servos in, motor needs to finish getting mods on the carb for rc use, and some time to start would be great.
