Look like dog-doo. Unless you cowl it.

ok.. I've looked at the Saito 450 and decided that I prefer the looks of a 5-cyl. engine. So does anybody make one that you guys would recommend for the Stearman other than the Saito 350? I really want to fly this thing with the cowl off as a Stearman should be flown but I realize that I need more power for flying it here in Colorado.

Thanks,

Mark

Ok.. looks like the Magnum would be a good choice and from what I have been able to read it is close to 64cc engine, is this correct? Then next question is where is the best place to order one and what kind of a price would I be looking at. I checked Tower but they don't have this one listed on their website, hence the request for a place to buy it.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark , for answers to alot of your questions go to the radial engines thread here on rcu. I got lucky and got mine on ebay for around $400. I dont know if you can still find them there. but find the thread and ask your questions there. We have had some great sessions there.

Actually, i just got the last one a couple of weeks ago. It was missing the canopies but those can easily be made from scratch. However, I did ask if they were ever going to produce it again and one of the staff mentioned that they were working on a Quick Build version of it to be released in the future.

Regards,

Mark

Hey Mark, I bought mine missing the canopy also. You can buy GP Stearman canopys that fit perfect. I don't think you are member of the Longmont club? You should join us as we start flying at our new field later this year. Wide open with a 600' runway. Take care, Jerry.

Hi all,

Well after 9 flights I the my AW Stearman is a keeper. What a plane, Like most of you I am using a Siato 325 FA 5R except it one of the single plug that the origonal owner sent back to Saito for the front plug to be added.

Reading the origonal post here about the hard landing gear I made my own using Robo struts for the 77" Zroli Stearman. Boy am I glad I did. Now several menbers of the club I belong to want to buy it and no way am I going to sell unless they meet my very high price. lol.

Can the OS 5-300 radial be used in the GP Stearman? Are the wing wires necessary for stability in the AW Stearman? Thanks for the feedback

Well, I finally started building my Stearman this past weekend and so far so good. However, have a few questions concerning the flying wires; how do you build them? I have never made any before and the instructions are a little vague about how to make them.
Also, can anyone recommend a good graphics shop as I need a set of decals for this bird. As mine was the last kit that Aeroworks had it didn't come with windscreens or decals.

Thanks,

Mark

For those buying a used Stearman and are pondering the ASP FS400AR:

Flies like a charm!

CG @ 150mm top wing, AOA corrected by shimming the trailing head of the top wing by 4mm

So anyone still flying their Stearman out there?

After two seasons of great service the Stringers in the fuse had started to become loose. I noticed this by the plane getting all fidgety in the air. After stripping it down I noticed nearly all the Glue spots had come loose. It was mearly being held together by the covering! The glue is very brittle so just a heads up to those still flying.

That was a good opportunity to swap all the stringers against fresh ones altogether and while covering I recieved a new load of Litho

So I tried something... And one thing led to the other

The struts are reworked too. I didnt like those square ones very much.

After about 50h of work I am almost done. Cant wait to fly this great plane again.

I have one of these that has been sitting on the shelve for 4 years. I bought it secondhand . It needs some TLC starting with the cowl that was cracked and cut full of holes. I have repaired the cowl but the paint matching is less than perfect. . The previous owner slapped a Zenoa 62 with spring starter on it. I wish I could afford a ASP 400, even secondhand would have done the trick.
Well, main thing is that I got going and that I stumbled across this thread. I got some valuable tips here. It seems to me like the producers of these kits discontinue all the nice ones! Literally all the planes I have are discontinued, bar one, the Sbach from Pilot.
