Default Ultra Sick 60 - Too Much Power! Help!!!

I have an Ultra Stick 60 with a Saito-100 in it. I installed the optional flaps and am having a blast with the excess thrust, until time to land. My problem is that the idle is still enough thrust to almost do a full flyby even with full flaps extended. A buddy at the field recommended changing the prop to something that will create more drag. The current prop is 14X10 and the engine is still in the break-in phase. I believe that I may be able to reduce the idle a bit more once the engine is fully broken in, however, I am not sure the power reduction will be enough. By the way, the thing climbs vertically for quite a ways.

Thanks,
Sal

a 14-10 is a very High pitch prop.. Which means its allowing lots of air to pass through it.. A flatter blade will provide a break... Try a 15-6 that should help it slooow doooown.. My 120 sized slows waaaay down with an 18-6.... Oh and WELCOME TO RCU!

Thanks a bunch for the info and the welcome. By the way, that is a very handsome picture of you! Seriously, thanks again. I completely understand the idea of creating drag with the prop 'disc'. I will let you know how that works out.

Sincerely,
Sal

Oh, we all knew it was you. My theory was that you got Ultra Stick and Ugly Stick confused one day and had a horrible self inflicted accident at the field one day. Wasnt going to bring it up cos you might still have that Ugly Stick handy...

Seriously tho, I agree that that 14X10 prop is way too much pitch for an Ultra Stick. Flew mine with a Magnum .91FS and a 14X6 or 7APC IIRC. Flaps down it would leap into the air. Even without the flaps deployed it would float in extremely slow for landings.
One of these days I need to replace it.

Is there an APC W (wide) prop sized for the Saito 100? That would be the way to go, although they are pricey!

WOW!are you going pylon raceing? That 10 pitch is way to much. I have the same plane and motor. In fact just put a new fuel tank in it this morning. Dont go over a 6 pitch prop, like Ice said, or you will continue to fly down the runway at idle, remeber your plane only weighs between 7.5 and 8lb[8D]. Or close to that.
I am swinging an APC 15X4 Wide, fairly slow but talk about thrust. I love to go out with the UltraStick and hover among'st all the U-Can-Do three D planes. I think it upsets them to see a stick holding hover for as long as they do

Ice Man sorry about the accident with your face[:-] LOL

This has been an eye opener. On full scale airplanes you think about introducing drag by adjusting the pitch to a flatter pitch, but I never gave it much thought on models until now. Power has never been an issue, but with the Saito 100, oh brother watch out!!! I bought a 15X6 and will try it out today at the field.

By the way, did anyone have any issues with pushrod binding because of the extreme angles from the servo to the control surfaces? Also, what in the world are they smoking talking about 4" of throw on the rudder. My model's rudder would hit the elevator with throw exceeding 2-3/4 inches.

Thanks again,
Sal

SalRocker

I followed a thread on US 60 build and mods when I put mine together. Anyway I moved my throttle servo as far forward as possible, just cut out a new ply mount for it. I did all this because everyone was comeing out way nose heavey with stock configuration, and I hate to give lead a free airplane ride[:@]. I mounted my rudder servo on top of the fuse just ahead of the rudder with pull pull set up. My elevator servo is in the side of the fuse ahead of the stab. I balanced perfect with my Saito 100 and no lead[8D]. All this gave very direct throws and no binding.

Ice have you tried some oil of Olay for your face
