Well I have decided on a Great Planes Gee Bee Racer for my newest project. I am sitting and waiting on UPS to deliver it to my door. I choose this plane over the Little Toni & Shoestring Racer. I am really looking foward to getting this barrel in the air.

I have a couple of questions already, Even before I have the model in my hands.

What engine should I use? I like 4-Strokes alot better than 2-Strokes, And I am looking into maybe a Y.S engine but I am not sure what size.

I have also thought about a Saito Twin, But not sure if it would be a good choice for speed......

Whatever you guys think would be good on this plane let me know.


Also if any of you have flown this plane what is the speed of it with your set-ups?

A ys 120 would be great........You dont need any larger... More wingloading on a geebee , and the more it becomes a flying brick!!! There was a guy on here that put a 30cc weedwacker in it, and on the maiden demolished it on laning due to the massive wingloading.. I would even go a satio 120....... Definatly a four banger so you can swing a larger prop around that massive fuselage.... Keep us posted.. I have been intrested in one myself.!!

i have a freind that has this plane and he has a evolution 100 and he wants to know what prop he should put on it?

Regarding the GP Gee Bee

Man I have to tell U I built this plane and loved the way she turned out.

HiTec 605 on everything 645 on Rudder.

Saito 150 GK Master Airscrew Classic 18 * 6 prop

She ripped just like a pylon racer. Took alot of rudder on Take Off and she launched nicely.

Don't use the GP CG in my opinion it's a bit to far aft.

She lasted for 11 flights then on landing in 15mph winds she made a violent snap and it was toast.

The secret is keep this bad gal moving and land her on Low Rates moving the CG .5 forward.

Best of luck and don't forget detail that fake motor and make some Spark Plug wires.
Using the Pilot figure U have to slice his neck for him to fit. Build her lite.

About 2 hours ago UPS arrived with the Gee Bee, I stopped eating dinner to open the box and see the contents. I am very pleased how well everything looks.

The painted Fus is very smooth, Only thing I noticed was a couple of small winkles on the wings but nothing heat will not take away. I do not like the Foam Tires, Or the Tail wheel but I will figure them out later when I've had more sleep.

I am very impressed with the size of this model, WOW!

I have been thinking of a YS 110 or Saito 150GK, Not sure just yet so keep your comments coming please.



Here is a couple of small photos of what I got to unpack so far!!!

Do a search on the GeeBee. There is a humongous thread on this plane.....Lots of good info about engines.

I've had my Gee Bee R2 about 7 months now and I really like the plane. Mine has a Saito 150...standard servos except for the rudder (75#)....I also used 440 rods all the way around. I hate using the wooden poles they give you...just don't trust em. I mounted a remote glow just under the cowl on the front of the fuse, a long glow starter fits well. I mounted the switch vertically low on the fuse. The best article on this plane was in RC Report about a year by D.Pettit. I did almost exact everything that he did and the plane came out great. You DO have to get the CG RIGHT!!!!! This plane does not have a CG range....it has a Center of Gravity..one spot and thats about it. The instructions tell you to use a string through the fuse with the wing bolted on.......if you don't have a CG machine. I used both methods and the string method just didn't work for me. Take your time with the CG and get it right and the plane will fly as advertised. The landing is another matter. The best procedure for me to land this plane is to be a a higher altitude on final than normal...use about 3 to 4 clicks of throttle (depending on engine and prop) and bring it in a little steeper than normal..then a few feet above the ground bring the nose up and throttle back (do not porpoise the plane) and make a 3 point landing. I have flipped this plane twice prior due to a shallow landing approach and too much speed. I have not flipped it landing it this way (yet). The only thing that I don't like about this setup is with the Saito 150 and tank that came with the plane I can only get a 5 min. flight. It seems that you no sooner take off and its time to land. I hope this info helps...........let us know how the plane turns out. Oh yeah...concerning the landing you CAN get it too slow so be sure to keep some throttle on until just before flaring for landing. Have a Ball!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not worked on the Gee Bee since I got it from MR. UPS MAN,,,
Instead I have been Building a GP Cessna for my Father........................ To my suprise the Cessna is turning out to be a Great Looking Aircraft. So I am still trying to decide the engine for the Gee Bee, I am wanting to put a Saito 150 - 220 on the Nose, I just cannot decide on the exact one as of yet.

I have also been checking out Robarts Aluminum Wheels & Struts, Does anyone know anything about these items whether they are good or bad for the money...

Note: My PILOT that came with the Gee Bee is already headless, "LOL" I think I got ripped on that item.....

a friend of mine used the robart struts and they worked real well...he had a hoped up YS 1.30 in it and his son flew it, bounced on landing and went to full power and dumped it...it was a good flying airplane...he has another on his bench now!!!

Definately go with the Robart struts, they are well worth the time and money. Now for my two cents worth. Like many other rcu members, I had a lot of trouble getting my belly pan to fit right, so look out for that. I ended up having to do some sanding on the trailing edge to get mine to fit. I also invested in an onboard glow system to go with my YS 110. I'm not risking a flameout with this beast, she'll fall like a rock.

I'll suggest what NOT to do.... use a Saito 182 Twin!! I have one in mine & it sounds nice, but the added 14 oz over the 150 single does not help the landing speed much. I have a second GeeBee in the box in case version 1.0 bites the dust. I added a 20oz tank since the 182 would drink the stocker dry before I could take off & make the three landing attempts I need with this brick. Next edition will go light; single cylinder saito.
I'm not much of a fan of the stock pushrods, I replaced them with some carbon ones. Also, I'd recommend some longer screws for the pants to prevent the threads from coming out. The robart struts will help the bouncing problem, but the added weight and $$ kept me away for now.

We an Update on the Gee Bee, The Belly Pan is a perfect Match to the bottom of the Fus.
I have read alot of Post's about this being a fitting problem but I test fitted my Pan and it matches perfectly, I must have got lucky on that one. I am still deciding on the engine, Either the Saito 150GK or YS 110, It is really a hard decision to make. Also I have been looking does anyone know if you should use a spinner or a hub type spinner?


Well if anyone has any photos they would like to share of their Gee Bee I would love to see them.
