Default H9 P-40's Engine mounting angle

Have any of you mounted your engine at an angle so less removal of the cowl will be needed? If so, what angle. (And what engine). If you mounted the engine of your choice, is your muffler hanging out a lot?

I mounted mine inverted and lowered the tank. Well about 5-10 degrees off center. Initial run up was very good.

I'm tilting mine about 30 degrees clockwise and hope to minimize the cowl damage to clear the muffler.

Friend of mine runs a Saito 100 inverted, has a flex pipe on it, didn't have to cut the cowl at all. Sounds great; these H-9 warbirds are incredible fliers. Can't wait to see the P-47.

TS,

Can you mount the engine inverted and use an inverted pitts muffler from Slimline?

Saito 100 with 90 degree elbo and flex pipe, no cutting required.
What prop are you using for this plane and engine and what degree offset?

All I have on hand is an APC 16x4 Wide, so a trip to the LHS is needed. I'll post a pic when I get home this evening....90 degree elbo eh? Does Saito offer one of those?

I cut right on the gray/black line on the bottom. Resembles a bit of a triangle if you know what I mean. Here is anothertrick. If you mount it like I did about 10-20 degrees off center (inverted), then your glow plug will be hiding behind the cowl and you cannot get to it. Option "A" is on board glow which I did. Even though I have a big opening in the bottom, to make it wide enough to get at the plug would darn near cut off the whole bottom of the cowl.

So I had my self proclaim very smart boy in his 3rd year as a mech eng student build me a special tool. I took a regular small socket the size to fit the plug. then took a piece ot thin steel the size and shape of a hacksaw blade. I then had him grind down a pit of the socket leaving just enough to fit over the plug, then he welded the steel to the socket. Works great. I just slide it in the cowl and place it on the plug and turn it a couple times to get it loose.

I need to find my camera.

I am planing to do the same. YS FZ91 and Slimline Pitts inverted.
I think I have to make an air outlet hole under the cowl anyway,
so an inverted muffler would not be a bad choice.
I didn't inspect the engine room of the kit though.

SAI65140 for elbo around $14 and the flex pipe with pressure tap is SAI182td1112 for $40. but a pipe holder on end of pipe and a rubber exhaust extension to blow away from body. looks ok

Sorry forgot to answer first part.
Yes it will fit a Saito 100. That is what I have it on. Also putting it on a Saito 91 for my GP Spacewalker
