Default Great Planes PT17

Good day

Does anyone know what scale this plane is?
How about the dummy radial it comes with. Pretty cheesy looking.
Has anybody found a better looking radial to replace the original with?

Thanks for any help

A bit bigger than 1/6 smaller than 1/5 would guess about 1/5.5 or so. The dummy radial stinks but its OK for a ARF. If Williams Brothers comes back with a kit then you could make a 7 cyl with a new crankcase. I will do that to a Ziroli Stearman after I wear out my GP Stearman. I just enjoy it for what it is and don't want to spend more time changing all the things that would make it a better looking scale plane. Its easier to start a build from plans and make a nice Stearman IHMO.

I just did about 25 touch and goes yesterday. Its a good flying plane.

Hi Todd,

Go to www.franktiano.com and check out the dummy engines there. They make a one fifth and a one sixth scale radial.

Cheers,
Norm

The Tiano radials are meant for warbirds with cowled engines. They are cast resin replicas of the FRONT half of a radial engine--just the part you'd see by looking into the front of the cowl.

Not useful for a fully exposed replica radial, really. Williams Brothers is the only solution, other than scratchbuilding one. FWIW, Williams Brothers Model Products is back in (limited) production, as of this month. Fortunately, I have a little stash of NOS WB cylinders already squirreled away that I'm going to be making my GP PT-17 engine from. Agreed, the supplied one does look pretty dumb. It's a shame they didn't take the time to make it look right. I don't know why this is such a difficult thing to replicate.

Great news for those of us who need replica engine cylinders, WWI accessories, pilot figures and the like.

Incidentally, the PT-17 is a calculated 1:5.33 scale. That's kind of dumb too, isn't it?

FWIW, my 1/5 scale dummy cylinders are shipped and on the way to me as we speak--from Williams Brothers Model Products.

They are in stock. Hurry, before the word gets out too much.
