Default DPM Ultimate + Saito 180 Question

I'm planning on mounting a Saito 180 on a Dave Patrick Ultimate. I was curious what muffler to use and what engine orientation you'd recommend. I'd like to minimize cutting the cowl if possible.

Thanks

Default DPM Ultimate + Saito 180 Question

I use a Slimline Pitts muffler w/smoke. Still have to cut out a lot underneath but the plane stays pretty clean

Default Cowl cutting

No matter what engine you use on the Ultimate you will have to cut a lot of the cowl.

The Ultimates just have a very small cowl.

Default DPM Ultimate + Saito 180 Question

I am using a Mac's Products manifold, flex tubing and muffler adapter with the stock muffler. Required minimal trimming of the cowl.

Default DPM Ultimate + Saito 180 Question

Thanks for the feedback. RCJones--What's the model # on the slimline Pitts muffler?

I think I'll decide what muffler to get once I have the engine installed. Slimline makes a Pitt's for a 70degree install on a CG Ultimate, wonder if that applies to the DPM?

I'll probably install the engine inverted.

Thanks again.

Default DPM Ultimate + Saito 180 Question

Chuckr53,
I don't know the part # but I used the same muffler on my Goldberg Ultimate and the DP Ultimate. Same muffler on the 150/Goldberg and 180/DPUltimate. However I am not using the smoke system on the Goldberg and have yet to use it on the DP.

Default Slimline Pitts = Power Loss ?

RCJones, do you know if the Slimline Pitts w/smoke robbs any power from the engine as opposed to the stock muffler?
I am thinking about using one but I don't want to sacrifice performance.

Also, did you mount the engine inverted or horizontal?

Default DPM Ultimate + Saito 180 Question

Padre,
The muffler robs no power from the large Saitos. Don't be scared to put one on. My engine is mounted sideways/90 degrees. That is the way the Pitts muffler was designed. I believe they are coming out with one for the inverted setup also. It may be out already. Give slimline a call. It may however take a Loooooong time to get one from them. I found mine on shelves of other hobby shops. I had waited 6 months and no dice so I started looking elsewhere.

Default DPM Ultimate + Saito 180 Question

Saito 180 side mounted.....stock muffler....you just have to make a tunnel....actually half a tunnel in the lower firewall area to clear the muffler.....it is very easy to do.

I mounted my Saito 180 same way, using the Macs flex system. Clean, minimal cutting and you can mount stock or tuned muffler.

Default I was wondering

If anyone knew of any thread or information that gives details about a Gas powered DP Ultimate other than the RCS1.4

I am thinking of shoving a Fox 2.4 in one of these

Default DPM Ultimate + Saito 180 Question

If you find something please send my way as well. I am just sitting here scared to cut into the firewall. By the way has anyone else found a problem with clearance of the the control horns on the rudder in reference to the rear of the fuse? And also the length of the screws to mount engine on the mount itself? Some hardware just doesnt seem right. May just be me considering I dont know what I am doing.

In the picture you will notice in bottom left corner the marking where the muffler has to go. Any help is appreciated!

The rudder horns definitely need to be trimmed because at full deflection they hit the fuselage. Either trim them or replace them. I found it necessary to replace some of the hardware because it just didn't fit or wasn't very good quality, such as the wheel collars.

Default SAITO 1.80 MOUNTED W/ MUFFLER

Finally got around to mounting my saito on my DP ulty today. Was not to hard just had to dremel out about 1/4" off the firewall away where it would not clear. only took about 30 mins or so to get it right.
Anyway here is a pic of what I did, for all of you who are at this stage I hope it will help a little.
