RE: New H9 Cub??
I was able to mount my Saito .56 on the existing mount. I intentionally have the needle valve pointing down and just extented it with some pushrod cable and a wheel collar for a knob. It exits the cowl next to the muffler and isn't a problem to adjust. This engine has the older thin and long muffler and didn't require hacking the bottom of the cowl much. I did have to use one of those silicon exhaust extenders to dirvert the hot exhaust away from the bottom where it would damage the covering, though.
The .56 provides for very scale flight at half throttle and will take off at half throttle. Landings are a real hoot and our field is at 5500 feet elevation but the darn thing will float forever. I'm the 'scale guy' in our club and insist on flying my planes like the big ones fly. Got a compliment on the Cub the other day when one of the members said he thought a real club was buzzing the campus (we fly at Precott's Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, they provide the site, we maintain the site. Good folks!)
I'll include a couple pictures.

RE: New H9 Cub??
If you need a 'challenging' Cub, try a Modeltech J-3 Cub. It looks like it's fuselage is clipped as well as the wing (48"). Makes my Kyosho Gee Bee seem like a trainer to take off and will snap into a spin in a heartbeat BUT recovers easily. I called it my P-51 Cub because it was way too fast. Maybe the .30 4 stroke made it heavy but it was good in wind. Saddly the POS fuel tank split and leaked raw fuel all over the inside of the fuselage. Covering started coming off and it looked like crap. Lost it in a deadstick that came up a little short. I'd get another one if it was ever on sale for $50 and soak it in fuel proofer. It's the Cub for guys who think Cubs are boring or if you're just tired of sticking needles in your eyes.

RE: New H9 Cub??
With these modern designs made of jigsaw ply frames and covering and the fuel tank sitting out in the open a fuel spill is a disaster. I think it's best to do a fill test of the tank system outside of the airplane before installing it. I wonder what ARF tanks can be trusted not to split or it they should be automatically switched to Dubro/Sullivan/Hayes, etc.??

RE: New H9 Cub??
I just picked up a new pnp cub at the local hobby shop. Inspected the contents and found the Rudder smashed. Very disapointed. The hobby shop called Horizon for me and they are sending a new kit to my home. Will let you know how it arrives

RE: New H9 Cub??
Thought I would wake up this thread with my engine installation pictures. The OS .52 is quite suitable for this cub. THe engine is mounted almost inverted with the exhaust exiting out the bottom. I lowered the tank about 3/8 of an inch just to be sure I don't have flooding problems. This all worked quite well. I have had three flights with no engine problems at all. Take-off power is brisk, but of course hot-rod aerobatics are out of the question. Therefore I have to get used to flying on the wing and keep a little throttle on due to the drag. Cooling is adequate but at 1/3 throttle most of the time there isn't a lot of heat build-up. The fuel dot is in the scale location; a hassel to install, but works OK.
I narrowed the cowl by cutting a "V" section out of the nose. This makes it look much more scale in my view. I also installed the engine a little higher than what was called for in the instructions. The repaint job is only fair with Ultracote paint.
The last picture shows how I covered up the vast open fuselage aft interior. I just ironed some Ultracote covering on to a slap of moderate weight paper and glued it to the top of the fuse curving it down and around to the bottom just behind the pilot.

RE: New H9 Cub??
Hi ARF, As stated above my first three flights went well.
I had to deal with a crosswind which I immediately drove home the need to keep on the rudder. Turns were also much better with rudder. I need to figure out how much rudder throw to mix into the ailerons on my Futaba 9C. Rudder only turns without any elevator input and a little opposite aileron were great fun. I had a little scare when I did a near vertical wingover that resulted in a total vertical stall and fall out of the sky of about 30-40 feet before the wings bit and I was again flying. This cub is obviously a slow flyer.

RE: New H9 Cub??
Oops, sorry, didn't read as carefully as I should have.
Definitely rudder is a function to be used with this plane, I don't mix it because there are maneuvers that mixing would mess up. Crosswinds test your mettle for sure but there ain't nothin' prettier that a greased in wheel landing with this plane. I like the stall turns it does. Everything slow and deliberate, much more enjoyable than my Gee Bee I finally retired.
Enjoy and don't forget that rudder!

RE: New H9 Cub??
Is that the Hanger 9 Cub? If so did you recover it or paint it?
You've got yourself one fine looking 'warbird' and I should think the .82 should be way plenty of zoom.
While at the field this morning a real J-3 flew over at about 500ft (our field a about a mile off the end of Prescott's Love Field's property). I have to really throttle my Saito .56 back to make it look as slow as the real bird. Best Cub I ever flew. No 'Cub' nonsense on the ground just a great positive flying experience.

RE: New H9 Cub??
Hey Guy's
Quick question... How is set up/take down at the field with the new H9 Cub? do you have to completely remove the struts or do they fold so you can leave them attached to the wing ? I want another Cubby BUT I don't want something that takes 30 min and two dozen screws to get flight ready
Thanks
John

RE: New H9 Cub??
ARF GUY,
Yes thats the Hanger 9 ARF, It's actually a little lighter green than in the photos. It was painted,
with, after a LIGHT sanding with TOP FLIGHT primer, painted with Aircraft "Touch up " Paint( I can
PM you and tell you which one if you or anyone else would like ) and Clear Coated with Top Flite
Flat clear ( Decals and all ) All aluminum parts were sand blasted or were "soaked" in a strong paint
stripper down to the bare metal. The Black and White strips are vinyl though. As I said the landing
gear are fully functional and are made of 6061 Aircraft aluminum. They have about 4 inches of travel!
The interior is painted Gull gray( FLAT ) I'll try to post some more ( Better ) Pics soon.
Maiden is just around the corner!!!!
I think there might be some in progress pics in this thread?
Fill free to ask me anything you want!
Thanks RICK
PS The pics are on page 7 I think

RE: New H9 Cub??
Thanks for the info rccrippen. I'll stick to bright yellow for mine since we have hills and trees around our field and an OD plane sort of vanishes on final.
Good to see some creative folks out there, it makes the hobby just that much more fun.

RE: New H9 Cub??
Gary SS,
Yes it was alot of work, But any thing worth doing...Is worth doing......well, Right ! Don't ya think?
This was may my first attempt at painting Ultra Coat and man prep IS EVERYTHING!!!
Lots of research and patience not to mention the "Screw UP'S".
The only snag I'm having right now is there seems to be to much "slop" in the elevator linkage,
I"ve Got to get rid of it! I just won't fly it with as many hours as I've got in it now, till that
problem is GONE! I did'nt use the stock linkage, I used one I was told was "Alot Better" Maybe
I should have stuck with the original??
How much movement are you other Pilots getting ( in the linkage around the front end, High & Low rates)
with the stock one?
I Know it's not the servo's Cause I had two extra Hi Tech 635HB's laying around I used on the elevator and
rudder, I think there rated at 133 oz's on a 6 volt system which is what I use on all my Aircraft.
Any Ideas, No matter how far out there would be appriciated!
Thanks to all you Gentlemen,
RICK
PS GARY & ARF Guy, Did you see "the in progress" shots that show you the color of the interor ??
there back a few pages

RE: New H9 Cub??
I also used HS-635 servos but with the stock elevator pushrod. I had to move my servos forward about 4 inches so I built a balsa hatchwork brace in the cabin area through which the pushrod runs. That made it a solid set up.
