Don't put much faith in how a simulated model feels vs. how a model feels in the air. Has not been my experience there is much in common with what I've flown vs. what was shown.

My Giant SS is on the way from Chief Aircraft with the BT-34B Fuji. Looking forward to some good flying. I will likely leave the stock gear as I've been flying a Contender 60 for many, many years with similar wing gear and no problems, though I may add strut fairings and lose the spats (grass field).

Charlie,

I think you'll like how the GSS flies with the Fuji 34. I've got the BT 34 ei in mine. I'm spinning an 18/8 Xoar and that seems to be just right. Not too much power, not too little.

Though the Fuji is not a powerhouse, it flies very well with some mild aerobatics. I enjoy more scale-like flying anyway. Nice ship to fly and you can get a little fancy with it if you'd like, as well. Great for touch-and-goes, just watch how much she floats.

I agree on dropping the pants if flying off of grass, then the stock gear is just fine. I really liked the appearance of the ship with the pants, so that's why I went with the Stearman gear. Lots of discussion on this thread previously regarding how some poorly glued wing gear-mounting blocks giving out, so that was my other concern and reason for the Stearman gear. I'd like to see your fairings on the main gear when finished.

Good flying!

John from Portage, Michigan.

Hello Wes,

Made a hard landing. The gear ripped out of the fuselage, as it was intended en designed. Not too much damage. The plane is repaired already. However, the wheel pants did a nasty job on the wings when folding back. Now to get lower landing speeds, I plan to mix flaperons on the plane. Two questions for you. 1. What is your CG (in cm) at the moment? 2. What prop do you use at the moment?

Thanks for the answers in advance.

Regards,

Eric Schumacher, Netherlands

@ schummie
My CG is now 141mm from the leading edge of the wing
I using now flaperon 60%. Prop is Menz 20x6.
This is much better to slow the plane down for landings.
Regards Wes.

Will you expand on your flaperon settings please? You say you are using 60% - does this translate to 60 degrees down? 60% of suggested aileron down travel?

With your flaperons down, would you anticipate trouble picking up a low wing with an aileron command, or do you forget ailerons (with flaperons extended) and pick up a low wing using rudder only?

My ailerons move around a 45mm up and 45mm down.
flaperons is 60% of these movements.
See my next video of my landing with flaperon soon.

Hello Wes,

Thanks for the info. I'll try these settings too. One more question?. Did you mix in some down elevator when deploying flaperons to compensate for the tendency to climb. And if so, how much. Thank you in advance for your answer.

Not for the moment.
Maybe later. But whem I using the flaperon(ailerons down)I should just give a little bit more up with the elevator than without the flaperons.
Maybe I'm going to mix this in later.
Regards Wes.

Did you guys know there was a 1930’s low-wing monoplane made by Kinner called the Sportster? Also a version with wing mounted wheels called the Sportwing? More than passing resemblance to the GSS. The engine is a radial (the same Kinner B-5 the PT-19 used) and the cockpit is very forward. Though one version has a full canopy.

I decided to add tail bracing in the arrangement of the Kinner and also adapt the gear strut covers to a more grass friendly but 1930ish style with a nod to the Kinner. I will also “boxy up†the bubble canopy to give it a more 1930’s look with 1/4†trim tape.

Here is an image of the Kinner and an artist’s rendition of the GSS with a few cosmetic mods.

Charlie,

That's absolutely amazing!!! Great find on your part. Your GSS should closely emulate the original bird if you make the conversion. Just goes to show you, everything comes back around at one point or another. A Saito 3-cylinder radial would really get you close to the original!! Do you have a GSS that you're thinking of converting?

Very Interesting!

That plane sure does look like the SS...or vice versa!

Great mods you have going.

Charlie,

... Do you have a GSS that you're thinking of converting?

Yep. Just arrived last week. I'm plodding along at my usual rate (which is slow but enjoyable). I futz with ARF's so it takes me three times as long as it should. Things like painting the receiver switch face to match the fuselage. Diddly stuff. I am very pleased with the covering job GP did, as I was on my last GP ARF. I gotta say they have surpassed me.

I ordered a second set of wire landing gear so I can fly it and trim it before I add the spats (which I haven't designed yet). The originals I'll then mount skis on.

I pegged the firewall (these are 1/8" bamboo I will trim flush with the triangle stock. Also one flush into the ply top & bottom. And here is a shot of the 1/8" aluminum tube I bedded in the vertical stab for the flying wire anchor bolts (2-56 X 3/4"). The wires are GP part GPMQ2150 that fit a 1.60 Ultimate. Sorry, kind of hard to get excited about those last two images.

And I'm not doing any major changes. It will be stock with some tweaks. Not moving the cockpit, adding the upper wing struts, reprofiling the vertical stab. Just "play" stuff for a 50/50 scale (looks good at 50 mph and 50 feet up).

I'm like you Charlie, I take my time, as I'm an old kit builder going back almost 50-years!!

Great idea to pin the firewall in with Bamboo. Funny, but the GP Giant Big Stik not only glues in the firewall, but uses aluminum triangle stock that's "riveted" into the firewall and fuselage sides. I'm surprised they didn't want to do the same with the GSS. Your reinforcements and enhancements to the structure should add quite a bit of strength. What are you powering your ship with?

She is a very nice flying bird, whether you are flying with the stock gear/pants, or the re-located gear to the underside of the fuselage. With my Fuji 34 BT Ei, only have needed a few ounces of lead under the tail and she flies very fine. Very majestic in the air!

You likely already know this, but if not it might save you a few minutes and some scratched paint when dialing in the plane to know the mains are a little too far back unless tweaked forward a little? Like most others I've flown that are similar design, these work pretty good if the axles are located directly under the leading edge while the plane is on it's gear. Liking your ideas of customizing a little! I didn't care for the grey trim around the outside of the canopy, painted mine all black. Doesn't sound like much, but it sure sets it apart from others. Here is a few more pics of a Kinner Sporster. The GSS is a long way off but could be bashed into a pretty respectable sport scale with a little ingenuity.

Chief Aircraft had the GSS for $275 and the Fuji BT-34B for $340 so that's the combo I bought. I also bought a couple Xoar 18 x 10 props and, from finish, balance and apparant quality, I am very impressed with them. I hope they fly as good as they look. I've been a ProZinger fan for years but may reconsider.

. . . when dialing in the plane to know the mains are a little too far back unless tweaked forward a little?

Thanks for the tip, Ahicks. I'll bring the gear forward a bit to the LE. Will add to the "rakish" look. I remember some control-line models that had the wing hung gear WAY forward of the LE; but that's a different game.

I've been flying a Contender 60 for 10 (!) years with the wing gear arrangement - but in trike. Not my favorite but it can be worked around.
