Wanted to buy semi scale ARF warbird - help
Hi,
I want to put a semi-scale ARF warbird in my fleet but don't know which one to buy.
Number one priority is that it must be a stable aircraft.
Number two, I would like retracts.
Number three, I would like to fly it with a glow engine between .60 to .75 size two cycle.
Number four, it must impress the grandkids.
I'm kinda leaning towards the Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk.
Does anyone have any experience with this? or Would you recommend another model?
Thanks for your help.
Fly4Fun,
Wayne Miller

Any of the Hangar 9 '60 size' warbirds should meet those requirements; stability being the most iffy. The new F6F Hellcat looks really good.

i'd not suggest a P40 or any rotating retracts plane as the only warbird in your collection.
i'd suggest the H9 miss america, the world models Petie II and my new favorite (still on my need to have list) is the H9 P-47 thunderbolt. it's pretty, it's differenct (i.e. not a mustang), it's light and doesn't have those wretched retracts to worry about. furthermore, with the P-47, you can have the entire engine and exhaust inside the cowl with only a rubber exhaust extension sticking out. plus, the invasion stripes are killer for kids.
Hanger 9 P-47 Thunderbolt... that would be my choice!

From World Models:
- P39 Airacobra http://ecsvr.com/abm/shopexd.asp?id=8
- P51 Mustang (Calls for a 91 4-stroke, but should fly with a 75 2-stroke. Has pre-installed retracts) http://ecsvr.com/abm/shopexd.asp?id=1107
- Spitfire (Has pre-installed retracts) http://ecsvr.com/abm/shopexd.asp?id=925

The H9 mustang is great. If you like pizzazz get the Miss America version, if you want war bird colors get the Marie version, its the same plane, different covering.
It flys like a pattern plane and its slows down for walking speed landings.

the H-9 90* retracts dont fold that quikly, at least not the improved version. the older style was pretty week and did fold alot due to ball joint failure. my bigest problem was the week cowl which I beefed up with a additional layer of epoxy at the rear of the cowl cooling fins

Wayne Miller...
If you want to step back in time a bit, the Great Planes P6-E Hawk looks like a winner to me. It doesn't have retracts, but they can be a pain anyways. It will fly with a .75 2 stroke but the Saito 125 4 stroke would be better. It's a very big, impressive, easy to fly airplane.
It would impress the grand kids. Nothing beats a great bipe for crowd interest.
I've got my eye on this and think I'll get one.
Thanks
Barry

RE: Wanted to buy semi scale ARF warbird - help
Hi,
I've been trying to respond but for the last week I've been getting a timed out message. I see this message finally went through (I just edited it) - sorry for being so long in responding.
I've ordered a H9 P-40 Warhawk, but I do like the looks of the P6E.
Thanks for your input, it helped me make the decision.
Does anyone know if I can use any other low profile servo other than the JR 791? They seem to be out of stock from my local suppliers.
It does not have to be a retract servo since I have a JR 9303, it allows me to control servo speed and end points. I was thinking any other high torque low profile servo would do.
Any help would be appreciated.

that's great! i've got a warhawk as well. i'm still waiting to maiden her. i've swapped out the rotating retracts for standard ones. they retract straight back. it's not a beautiful as original configuration but it's still nice since the P-40 has a large bulb in the front anyway.
good luck!

If you like Warbirds nd want a real WOW factor look on the Twins and multi forum there is a 81" B-17 for approx 20 size motors which will be easy to run and tune.
If you relly want to up the impression factor then use four strokes as well.

You want a nice semi-scale warbird ARF, take a look at the World Models 80" Zero:

The H9 .60 size warbirds fly pretty nice, but they fall short in terms of looks and flying qualities compared to this beauty.

any low profile retract servo works I used the futaba, the servo is strong and reliable for arround 50$ tower has one for arround 35$ they look alot like the futaba servo .the gear can be a little bit of a pain in the you know what once you get the bugs worked out they aren't that bad at all on mine I had to make sure the push rods cleared durring the rotation of the servo so it wouldnt bind after that it was a breeze just a couple of tweeks and they are fine youmight be surprised how light this plane is

RE: Wanted to buy semi scale ARF warbird - help
The H-9 P-47 (.60 size) is very stable, and the retracts work pretty well. Be sure to reinforce the firewall, and I had to add epoxy to the landing gear rails. I also coated the inside of the fuselage with finishing resin from the firewall to the former behind the wing saddle (you could crush the fuselage just picking it up before I did that. The plane builds straight, and even with a large 2400 mah battery pack, and an OS 91 4stroke, it still has a very light wing loading. The minuses are the things mentioned before, and the instructions only call for epoxying the root ribs together, but I removed the covering at the joint, and fiberglassed the wing joint. The wing joiner is very small, and since I did not want a failure there, I glassed it. I added the belly pan, (had to rebuild it first since it was warped beyond belief) and recovered the center with ultracoat. It flies great, and will do any manuver that the full scale was capable of.
This was also my first ARF. (probably won't do another one)
