Default How to use 3/8" shaft wheels with 1/8" shaft gear?

I've got a WM Cub that I've been using Robart scale wheels for that I'd like to change to Dubro Cub wheels for that bushplane look. How do people wheels made for larger shafts to fit skinny shafts? Thanks!!!

I guess you could go with a metalurgist and have him make you a stainless steel "bushing", which has 3/8 outer diameter and 1/8 inner diameter

The K&S tubing rack has a range of tubing sizes. Each size is a slip fit into the next size. You can often use a couple of pieces of different sizes to build up a thick enough bushing to work. However........

A 3/8" hole is going to take a lot of filling to come down to 1/8". You could fill the hole with epoxy and once it cures, drill the smaller hole. If you use J&BWeld, with it's metal filling, it should stand the wear. Also if the epoxy didn't stick to the wheel's plastic that wouldn't matter much as the epoxy would simply act as if it were a perfectly fitting axle. And of course, you could also drill out the epoxy to take a K&S tubing bushing between it and the axle. Or cast the busing in the epoxy.

Since there is such a large difference, and since the 3/8" hole is fairly large itself, you could also just plug that hole with a wooden dowel and then drill a 1/8" hole through the dowel. You'd probably need to strengthen the wood somewhat, but CA will do that easily if enough was soaked into the wood. And the wood would need a K&S bushing probably.

If you have access to a drill press, you can buy a piece of 3/8 dia aluminum rod at the LHS or local hardware store, cut it to the proper length to fit the wheels and drill a 1/8 inch dia hole thru the center. Epoxy the aluminum into the wheel.

Alternately, as darock mentioned, use several pieces of nested tubing, and epoxy the nested tubes together

If you decide to use a wooden dowel to fill up the space, you can drill the wood to fit a brass tube bushing that slides over the 1/8 inch wire

thanks! these are all really good ideas. i'm going to see what's available first then go ahead and purchase some dubro cub wheels. my cub has been out of commission far too long over such a small thing (as missing wheel. the robart scale wheels fell off during flight :-p found the wheel but now missing an adapter :-(

I found that the local Lowe's hardware store has some nylon bushing in their screw and fastener section that did tha job for me. Mine was 3/16 to 1/8 but they had a large selection of sizes

Yes, sorry about that, my english sucks

If you decide to go with the bushings you might wanna use a washer between the wheel and the collar so the wheel won't "slip" out of the bushing

You might consider using a wheel collar as a possible bushing - some of mine appear to be about 3/8" OD.
