Guys,I'm trying to get my saito to run properly in my ultimate and am having fits. This is my third 1.80 and most problematic to date.Starts, runs, slows down and quits.I've already turned the carb around so its in line with the tank, messed with the high speed needle and nothing.I'm starting to think that the small cowl openings in the front may not be large enough and is causing the engine to overheat.Did anyone have to close off the opposite side opening?Thats my next step after I try running it with the cowl off.If anyone out there has this combo let me know how you made out.
Thanks
Thanks

I am running a Saito 1.8 in my DP Ultimate. No cooling problems. Did not modify any of the openings. Did open the belly of the Cowl a bit more and have plenty of room around the cyl. head. I am running a Cline as it went lean when inverted and vertical. Good luck!

I side mounted my 180 and modified the inside of the fuse to get the tank up just under the decking. The stock tank position is too low for a side mounted Saito 180. No problems at all with mine.

I put a 24oz Dubro Tank in mine. I just got the dremel out and started cutting.....I did reinforce the cabane mounts when I built it back up. You could mount your 180 inverted if you don't want to move the tank. Also when side mounting the 180 you have to make a tunnel for the muffler to clear the firewall. None if this is hard at all. I think if you have a good look at it you could do it.

Mac's makes a 90 deg. adapter for the Saito (and others) to get you out of cutting the firewall. Also steel flex to get it to a point to attach the muffler.

why did you need a perry pump? wasnt able to suck the fuel enough??
i have one (perry pump) but have never used it for any engine. just asking as im considering a saito as my second primary engine after the ys140L i have.

I've had mine mounted already and tried running it,making the cutout in the firewall wasnt a big deal,I think I'm just going to use a perry pump.I've also got a saito 1.80 in my H9 taylorcraft and the tank/carb location is almost identical. The 1.80 in the taylorcraft was bought used and had a perry pump already installed,I've never had any problems with this setup so I'm just going to do the same with the ultimate. How did your airplanes fly with this combo?I'm thinking it should be more then enough power,am I right? Thanks again for all the tips.

If I were to do it again, I think I would go with the OS 1.6 or a Moki 1.8. I love the feel, sound and consistency of the Saito, but I am a bit vertically challenged. Mind you I am not getting the RPM readings that a lot of the others are getting from the 1.8. I have about 5 gal. through it now and it does get better (I think) with each run, but IMO it needs more. I am also not running the 25% - 30% Nitro others are either.
I had problems leaning out when vertical and inverted so I mounted a Cline, cleaned it right up!

Geeze.....my 180 pulls mine like a saturn V rocket in the verticle line.....it is almost too much power....I said almost...lol. A Saito 150 would probably be plenty for it. I love my Ulty and I love my Saito 180 DEARLY!!!!! GREAT combo!!

sounds like your idle adjustment is to lean or maybe even some debris is stuck in the needle valve causing insufficient fuel flow. If it runs for a while then slows down and quits, i would remove the needle valve and flush it out.

i will have to agree with ASP3D. i have 3 1.80s on different airplanes and none have given me the slightest bit of problems. 2 mounted sideways and one inverted. and all run terrific.

This is also my third, but the first one to ever have the tank centerline considerably lower then the carb, which is what leads me to believe I'm having fuel delivery troubles.I'll give the pump a shot.I'm about 100% sure that will fix the problem.I do love my saito's though, just hate the fact they are scarier to start then my full size cub.

Hey cubflipper02....does that H9 T-Craft fly good with the Saito 180 up front. How long will it fly on a tank? I'm looking for a good cross country engine to put on my T-Craft.......Thanks.

Could you go into this a little more? I just ordered the MACS setup you described. Where did you run ther muffler to? Where did you mount it and how?
As far as cutting the firewall, I can see needing to carve a notch for the stock muffler to fit (without the MACS setup), but I'm reading the word 'tunnel' here in describing a fix. Do they mean just carving a half-moon out of the bottom edge of the firewall, or actually routing the muffler into and then back out of the fuse?
