Default GP Cub

I finished one of these for a buddy of mine. He got the fabric covered Cub and he was not happy when he opened the box and the fabric was falling off the plane. A little work with an iron and heat gun got the plane looking realy good. We put a little saito in it inverted to keep the cowl clean and it flew like, well it flew like a Cub. I think this plane is a great deal for the price. The plane was well built and the cowl was nice fiberglass. It comes with big fat Cub tires in foam that don't weigh anything.

I had an OS .52 in my fabric Cub, also inverted to keep the cowl clean. I couldn't believe GP wanted the engine sticking out the side... Rude!

Pretty cool plane for a Cub. Looks good puttin' around. Ground handling is also "Cubbish". I did some beefing on the strut mounts as those "hinges" WILL fail.

Nice plane overall, with plenty of room for radio gear.

Default Good plane, except.....

Same as before... loose covering, and the weak point is the hinge material they ( Great Planes ) uses for the struts. Nothing but GP hinges. I replaced 3 of them with a Dubro pinned hinge. (see the picture...)

Otherwise, I went with an OS 70 four stroke for power, mounted inverted with an oversized fuel tank ( ditch the tank sent with the kit, mine split! ). It fit in the cowl real nice and I could fly at 1/2 throttle... just put around. Flew real scale like until you "cracked" the throttle!

Got the Cub and thanks for the pix in the strut fix. Now tell me about Inverted four strokes, I have never tried that, do you use a fuel shut off?

Mine is going on floats.
I have 2 Sigs both 1/4 both on floats, one clipped one not. Both with 120's plus a 1/4 Hanger 9 with a G23..
If I can't float it I don't want it.

I had no problems with the .52 inverted, and used no fuel shut off.

Default inverted mounting

I didn't use a fuel shut off on mine either. I did put a remote fuel valve so I could refuel the plane without removing the cowl ( or having tubes hanging out of the cowl ). I also went with a remote glow ignighter. Eaiser than reaching under the plane to remove ( and a lot safer! )

Best regards,
Mike

Default GP 80" Cub

Struts Don't Make Good Landing Gear !

I'm talking about the supplied CA hinges for the struts.

The first flight (about 2 years ago) was a trip !

The first simple loop, and both CA hinges broke at the fuse.

Now what do I do ?? Both of the struts are now hanging down from the wings. I've got to land !

Managed to rip the wings up pretty good at landing as the hanging struts were the first thing to touch the ground. When I look back, it did look kinda' funny seeing the Cub flying with the struts hanging down.

It was a fairly easy repair. I replaced the CA hinges with heavy-duty nylon hinges (pinned and glued).

It has flown many times since the repair and is one of my best flyer's. Powered with an OS 70 4-stroke.

Trash the original CA hinges on the struts !!!
