Default Filling Gaps with Strength?

This probably belongs in another forum, but I need maximum exposure and some quick replies.

I am assemblying a PacAero GeeBeeY and have hit a major snag. What I consider huge gaps in two places on the vertical stabilizer. Gaps that are tapered and up to an 1/8" of an inch in some places. Sanding will fix part of the problem. But...

I need some suggestions for filling the gaps that will complement Vert Stab strength, not just fill the gap. Help!

Baking soda smoothed into the gap, and CyA. Makes a very strong joint. Just make it smooth from the start so you don't have to sand it.
