POWERLINE HOBBIES--Lack of product support
I wasn't sure where to post this response by POWERLINEHOBBIES.COM so I picked this one for the new guys to see.
I recently purchased a used Powerline Hobbies Edge 540. The plane had some rough covering on it and I wanted to re-do part of it to match the painted cowl and other covering. I sent an email to [email protected] requesting the manufacturer of the iron on covering they use on their planes so I could purchase a roll of red to match.
Their response:

sorry but I can't give out that information. check with your local hobby store, they may be able to help you.thanks.
Why the secret? Aren't they proud of what they put on their plane? My local hobby shop had no idea what covering goes on it.
This isn't a flame----it's a fact!

It's ChinaKote. Nothing you can buy in the US will match it. It is probably closest to UltraCote True Red.
"sorry but I can't give out that information." He probably doesn't know. These small importers just buy what they are offered by the Chinese manufacturers.

In other words, Great Planes may not know they use Monokote covering on their planes?
On a good note, JRF was right-on, Ultracote tru red was a great match.

RE: POWERLINE HOBBIES--Lack of product support
Having never had a Chinese company build planes for me, I would guess that if they "spec" what goes on it, it is more expensive in any number of ways. I would guess that it is as stated above, they have no idea what is on it.
I always just try and match it with what I can with what is available to me. I have also stipped an ARF and just recovered it if I liked the model, was satisfied with the wood used, but wanted to get rid of the cheap-o stuff. One that comes to mind is my Hobbico Brightstar that is getting a bit dated. I love the flight characteristics of the plane but wanted it to be around awhile so I recovered it with Coverite.

RCShadow is right. They charge a lot more to build an ARF to US specifications then they do if you just buy what they have to offer.
Glad the True Red worked out for you.

guys before we start bashing get the facts. plh planes are good quality. there 46. sized edge is one of the most sought out 3d planes on the market. the extra is brand new and features great hardware and covering i.e phenolic horns.

The Edge and the Tiger Moth appear to be manufactured by Green Models, and their quality is very good. The Extra says League on the box, and their quality reputation is not very good. Some of the other items seem to be rip-offs of rip-offs of CMP and World Models designs. I would expect them to be right up there with the worst of the Ebay no-names.
You can not judge the quality of a kit unless you know who made it, and Powerline doesn't manufacture any airplanes. It is clear from the pictures on the website that they haven't even assembled and tested most of them. If they would tell you things like what it is covered with and whether the instructions are useable, you might be able to judge for yourself what you are getting, but with answers like "sorry but I can't give out that information." you are just gambling with your hobby money.

I dont know about their customer support.
But I have a Eagle 3D profile by PHL,
fit & finish is very good. Its a quality ARF.
Plane is out of production, disapointing
a lot of flyers I know of.

RE: POWERLINE HOBBIESLack of product support
I have a couple of their electric flyer's, and they all fly pretty well for the price. I also orderd a new rear stab from them, when I recieved it the mounting wholes where in the wrong spot. I emailed them about it, and 3 days later I had a new one on my door step.
