Hello everybody,
I have an SE ARF that I am about to begin putting together, but have not decided on the engine that I will use. My intention is to prop more toward power than speed. My LHS has suggested either an OS50SX or the Webra 50. Also, I would prefer something that is not a major pain in the butt to install. I sure would appreciate some suggestions from you folks.

A 50 SX would be a good choice. Get a mac's black muffler for it and you would have allot of power for your SE. I'm sure the Webra would also work fine but I have never tried one. Maybe compare HP and weight of the two. I had a Saito .72 on mine and it was a great engine but harder to install in the plane (throttle push rod had to be moved to the other side) and heavier.

If you are wanting power not speed a four stroke would be a better choice. A 70 size fourstroke would be the best size and shouldn't be that hard to install. The Saito 72 is a great motor and the carb will turn around so the throttle arm is on the right side. You might have to get a little creative in bending the throttle wire to make it work.

Our club has at least 3 of these planes, and all of them are flying w/either OS46 engines, or TT 46, engines. I have the arf version w/a TT 46, and it flies it very well, and was easy to install. It's a great plane, and you will get a lot of enjoyment out of it. (I didn't like the rubber band system of holding the wings on, so I put small hard wood pegs through the loops, inside the plane, to hold the wings on, and it works fine).
Hope this helps, Bill

I have a YS .53 on mine. Pulled the stock tank and replaced it with a Hayes slim one. Swapped the stock landing gear out for TNT's taller version, and use a spring to hold the wings on instead of rubber bands.
Great little plane.

I am flying mine with a OS .46FX. I changed the muffler out for a Tower Hobbies .46 muffler ($13.00). Runs like a cheap tuned pipe and I gained 300 rpm. The sound is like a small motorcycle.
We are at 4600+ feet elevation and I still have about a 700 foot vertical climb before stalling out (almost not seen).
You will love it, I do.

Irvine .53, flys great. (unfortunately, engine crankcase split open after less than 30 flights or so, probably a bearing too tight... returned to justengines on warranty.)
if you do go with a 4s, you will also need to replace the gear. a 12 inch prop is about as big as you can go on the stock gear.

I have an OS 46FX on my mine, and this is one of my favorite glow powered planes. It's way more than enough for your normal type flying.
If you are into harrier maneuvers (I would like to be ) then you might want to spend the extra money on the 50sx or one of the other "hot" 50s. My 46 has been one of the nicest most reliable glows I've ever had. I'm not a big two stroke fan, but it's a nice motor.

Lee Snover

My SE started out with an OS 46 FX on it and performance was okay. I put taller gear on it and switched to a Saito 72 four stroke and the performance went to outstanding. I use a 13x6 prop and it will hover as long as you can hold it and then accelerate straight up out of sight. I am building another SE to put on floats and it will have the same engine/prop combo on it.

Thanks for all of the replies.
I went with the OS 50SX based on your suggestions and many conversations at the field.
I sure am looking forward to flying this combo...now if I can only get some time to put it together..
Thank guys,
Rick

TS engines
Just so you all know Tiger Shark makes a 52 that really rips with a 11/5.5 prop.I have one on my Magic extra rite now.Iv'e been trying out the TS engines for two years now and they are great till you go above the 75.The 91 and the 120 are junk but the 75 on down are great running engines and are very cheap.I have a 75 that has done a lot of prop hanging in hot weather on a cap 232 and it still runs great, can't seem to kill it.The 52 will vertical hand launce a 6 lb trainer with a 11/5.5 on it.engine speed is a little high with this prop but the pull is great.I use this prop on my webra 50 also and it works great.

GMS
You want a great engine for a great price for that plane. CHECK out GMS engines under the MECOA web site. They even have a trade in procedure right now for old engines. A 46 bearing engine with trade in is $59.00 you can't beat that with a stick. I love OS engines but I am not fond of cast type casings, theses look to be machined.

I have a GMS 120 i am putting in a CG Ultimate i'm building.Paid 129.00 for it at lhs.Purchased it because clubmember has one in 71" sukhoi and it is empressive.A lot of our new members have the 46 in there trainers and they are impressive also.I have some OS engines and i like them but there price is way to high. The TT 46 is just as powerfull and reliable over the long haul as the OS and i can get two for the price of one OS 46.

Started out with an OS 46 FX, The plain was a blast to fly. changes over to a Saito 80 12X6 APC. Ground clearance was the biggest issue with the 80 and stock landing gear. In the air the plain was a trip .

I've flown mine very successfuly with an O.S. FX 40 turning a 12*4 APC. Overall this plane is a nice design, and would fly well with various power plants.

I put a TT46 heli engine in mine and it flies great on an 11x7 prop. I asked here last year when I was building my SE ARF about what engine to use.
Basically any good 40 or 46 2-stroke is more than enough. I toyed with suggestions to use a 65 or 70 4-stroke but then I'd have to replace the gear to get enough prop clearance. In the end I used an old heli engine I had laying around and have been perfectly happy with it.
So go with you preference; 40-46 2-stroke (OS, TT, ST, etc.) or a 65-70 4-stroke (OS, Saito)

Something Extra and Saito 72
This is the combo I've just purchased. Any advice on mounting the engine. I understand I'll have to get taller gear for it.
Did you guys use the stock motor mounts? My carb does not flip over like others have said so i have to mount the linkage on the left side. I assume you went thru the fire wall with the control rod and turned the carb arm over facing down. Did anyone have to adjust the thrust line with this engine? It is heavier than 2s so did you have any CG problems that could not be solved with movine the battery?
Any and all help in appreciated. Can't wait to fly it!!

I've flown it a couple of times, and like the light-on-its-feet feel it has with the 2C as opposed to how heavy it felt with the YS.
