Default Skybolt or Ultimate

I have a poll going on the kit builders side but have decided to go ARF since they are being built with better materials and designs and seem in the end a bit stronger and lighter weight. So tell me which one should I go for:

Great Planes - Super Skybolt ARF

or

Goldberg - Ultimate 10 300 ARF

Either way I plan on using an O.S. 1.20 AX to escape the earths gravitational pull.

Comparing the two ARF's, I have to tell you the same thing.

Wild aerobatics = Ultimate

Smooth Aerobatics = Skybolt.

Although, since the Skybolt ARF is about 2# lighter than its Kit counterpart, the ARF is a bit more maneuverable than the Kit

BTW, check out the World Models Ultimate 120R also (if you decide on an Ultimate)

The Ult is a much better aerobatic plane IMHO. Nothing tracks like an Ult.

OK i have seen pics of the Slybolt (Inside the fuse and such) and the materials used are thin ply as opposed to balsa as in the kit...Does anyone have pics of the Ultimate same tviews???

I don't have a pic but I have two ULT kits I have built. The entire fuse is pretty much lite ply. The front turtle deck and the tail feathers I think are the only balsa in the fuse. The wings are mostly balsa with two exceptions. The ribs that the wing struts bolt to are ply and the spars are hardwood.

I voted Ultimate based purely on looks and reviews with no Bipe experience at all so your mileage may vary.

I've got an Ultimate and a Skybolt.

If I were you, I'd get the Skybolt FIRST.

Do you you think all 100 have flown both planes. The only votes that count are from people who have flown both. The actual comments will mean more than the votes in the poll. I voted but have never flown any bipe. I just like the covering on one better than the other.

Same here, six Ultimates and a Skybolt ARF, and same thoughts.

The Skybolt is a bit easier to fly than the Ultimate initially.

I assembled a Goldberg Ultimate ARF this past spring and I have flown it all summer. I purchased a Great planes Skybolt Arf a few weeks ago and am presently assembling it now. I was not impressed with the Ultimate as far as quality of the kit. The fit and finish was not as good as most of the Arfs I have assembled in the last 4 years (30 + Arfs built). The kit design just seemed old and outdated. As far as the flight goes, I'm flying mine with a Saito 1.25 and it flies excellent. I really enjoy flying the Ultimate. The Skybolt is a modern design, laser cut parts and the fit and finish are excellent. The plane is building light and I'm powering mine with a OS 91 pumped FS. Since i have not flown the Skybolt as yet I can't tell you which one has better flying capabilities but the Skybolt is a beautiful plane and build.

FYI I picked up a cheap Ultimate 120R from Nitroplanes.

The finish was FLAWLESS. Not a wrinkle in sight. Good build.
I can't speak as to the quality of the covering materials but it feels better than what they normally use... It's not shiny.

Instructions what instructions?

Some of the hardware could/should be replaced with better stuff but it's a great Ultimate.

I'm powering mine with an O.S. 1.20 MK III Four Stroke w/Pump.

If only it was NOT PINK! Ugh.

Oh lawdy mercy!!! PINK!!!! That must be VERY embarassing......

On the other hand, if you fly it like I fly my Ultimate, ain't nobody gonna know what color it is.

You've got a 40 size Ultimate too, haven't you? Do the two Ultimates fly differently?

Re: Pink

Yes... though my daugher loves it... heh.

Re: Flies like the 40.

They do and they don't....

The 120R is far bigger but fairly fast at the same time.

It's hard to quantify, but if you've flown the H9 TOC Ultimate in G3, you know how it feels like it moves with more stability compared to the .40s.

The 120R is the same way. Not as large as the H9 TOC Ultimate, more like the 160 if anything.

Actually more like the Skybolt but with the Ultimate's ability to tumble and snap roll.

The control surfaces seem to behave with more preciseness for lack of a better term.

Think of your Skybolt in terms of smoothness in flight but with the 40's acrobatic tendancies.

At the other end of the spectrum I just picked up the Nitroplanes BiPe which is a 39" electric Ultimate.

I haven't put it together yet, but if it flies anything like the model I made of it in G3 it should be a lot of fun.

I have had several Ultimates and loved everyone of them. The first one was the Great Planes 40 size ultimate with an os46FX on it and it was a really great little plane to fly. I then moved up to the Goldberg Ultimate and while it was a great plane to fly I had to really changing the covering by adding lots of stripes to it because seeing it was difficult. The plane flew great with an OS120 four stroke on it. The next one I had was the Dave Patrick 120 size ultimate and this was one of the best looking and flying planes I have ever owned. I flew this plane with the same OS 120 4 stroke and it was prefect. I then moved up to a 27% ultimate with a BME 44 gasser on it and it is my favorite plane to fly. I have had a couple of other ultimates also and liked flying every one of them. Every time I get rid of one I end up getting another one because they are the best flying planes I have had. One of my friends has a kit built Skybolt and I have flown it also. It flys great and I would like to have one but if given the choice I would get the ultimate every time. You should really check out the Dave Patrick 120 size ultimate IMO it is a much better plane than the goldberg model.

Sorry I just went back and read the original post. Out of the two you have listed the Skybolt is the nicer of the two ARF's. I dont know if it will fly any nicer than the Goldberg ultimate but it is a much nicer ARF to build. I have built the Goldberg plane and while it is a nice plane it is a really dated ARF compaired to the Skybolt. One of my flying buddies has a kit built skybolt and one has the ARF version and both are really nice planes. I have flown the kit built plane and while it flew really nice it still did not fly like the ultimate. If I were going to build another Ultimate ARF I would first look at the Dave Patrick 120 size then the World models 120 size which looks just like the one in the picture in the post above this one. It looks like ths same plane sold by nitro planes and is probably made in the same factory. Like I said in the post above I have flown alot of ultimates and if I was buying another 120 size one would get the Dave Patrick plane.

Yeah the above is a clone of the WM version, but it's a MUCH CHEAPER clone... about 100.00 less.

The hardware is marginal but the finish is excellent.... if you don't mind ChinaKote Covering.

I like the WM version as well.

After you mentioned the Dave Patrick Ultimate I started doing my research and as I read more I thought that would be an awesome alternative to the GP or GB; then I continued to read about the horrible customer service and the fact that most of the time it takes teo months or more to get a plane from them. DP might design great planes but I don't think I wanna risk the poor customer service in case something isn't totally correct. Too bad....

You are right Dave Patrick's customer service has been questionable for some time and you have to wait a long time to get one of there planes sometimes. Just keep that plane in mind because it is the best one at that size. I have a fellow club member that has one and it flies really nice and looks great. If you could locate one from a fellow RCU'er that would be the best way to get one. I really liked flying the goldberg model and it flew great but was hard to see and needed stripes added to it because it is all one color. I really like flying my 27% with a gasser on it. I will always have an ultimate in my hanger nothing else flies quite the same.
