RE: Seagull Yak?
Hi Guys,
I had the pleasure of maidening one of these today at the field for a clubmate. Flew very well on the second flight. On the maiden, it was instantly obvious he had her set VERY tailheavy but still flyable. First flight was short, 2 mins. tops, not wanting to burn off too much fuel and make the aft C/G even worse. Cool down, refuel, and adjust C/G forward, a second flight was completed and was MUCH more fun and relaxing.
His plane has a Saito 125. I have a 50cc Aeroworks Yak, and LOVE it, the Seagull one has very similar flight characteristics. Fun little plane!! easy to fly, easy to land, very neutral.

RE: Seagull Yak?
maidened mine today, big 2000mah battery right up front and with fuel tank moved up to firewall, took off perfectly until i turned, damn, aiilerons reversed, duh! got it down ok though, servos reversed correct direction this time, hardly any trim required . no tip stalls or nasty vices, lands sweet at 1/4 throttle on final approach, dont know if it will 3d yet, seems to be loosing power with cowl fitted and overheating even with large exit hole behind engine, got so hot the backplate was melting to propellor. dont know if this is lack of air and a combination of new engine or what. will make hole bigger and try again next weekend.

Looking at the pictures that crycroft posted, I think we should all start talking about the CG in realtion to the wing tube.
Mine balances about the same place. But thats in the middle of the blue stripe.

RE: Seagull Yak?
just put my yak 54 .90 size up yesterday and flys great. my weight is at 8.9lb added 4 oz to tail. the cg is on the money at 2.75 in from tip of leading edge of wing right in from of the red strip.aprox 6" from the leading edge at the fuse. the plane wanted to glide for ever. was comming in and it was as stable as could be. just wanted to float in the air no stalling or snapping. it was hands free for 150ft of the runway comming in this is great. the only other plane i have that will do that is my Ucando. im running the g20 gasser with a 15x6 masterairscrew prop. running a 4.8 1500mah for engine and a 6v 1650 for receiver. with st126 jr servoes. fuel 32:1.

RE: Seagull Yak?
As promised some more feedback on C of G. I flew my model with the c of g set on the wing tube and consider that its now slightly nose heavy but quite safe to fly. I found the engine very difficult to set right though. Set it up perfectly in the vertical position and its way too rich with the plane level. I think the tank is too far back for the super Tigre G 90 I am using. I also found the model prone to overheating. Off strip landing resulted in pulled out U/C and holes punched in the wing. Should be simple enough to fix. I Think the 90 is a little on the small side for the plane especially if you want to indulge in prop hanging!

RE: Seagull Yak?
Maiden flight of my Yak-54 tonight, here is a short video clip of my first and second flights.
[link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suIc1zHTnCI]VIDEO[/link]
CG in the middle of the thick blue line (slightly noseheavy)
The third flight was a nightmare, one wheel fell of in the air (axle shaft broke, is the axle glued in place?) I had to do an emergency landing on high grass but the plane is OK

RE: Seagull Yak?
I am about to start on my YAK!!!! Cant wait I am just waiting on the servos to get here. I got my dad to get the landing gear and wheel pants painted. (he got the painter to match the paint from the wheel pant to pant the landing gear and then they repainted the wheel pant because the paint was pretty thin.) I think it will look really good. Cant wait to put it together and fly it.

RE: Seagull Yak?
I just finished my Yak, I put an Evolution 26GT gas engine, and Hitec Digital MG servos.
I'm glad I got caught up on this thread and read about the CG issues. Many thanks.
I can't wait to maiden it. I want a plane that will do a nice looking flatspin and inverted, hopefully the Yak will fit the bill.

RE: Seagull Yak?
rc-plane,
I put the initial CG at 130mm back from the lead edge at the root chord, it pretty much lines up with the aft edge of the wing tube holder.
well ahead of the CG that is listed in the book.
I'm going to go over my geometry and trig (which I have mostly all forgotten) again before I fly it.
Tail Heavy = BAD (that equation always works) LOL

RE: Seagull Yak?
hi, put your g of g in front of the wingtue as a starting point.
Anybody got any cooling issues, i,ve got a saito 125 in mine, i,m running on 20% bekra and a 15 x8 apc prop, any more holes in the cowling and i may as well leave it off!

RE: Seagull Yak?
I actually did take my cowl off. I was rinning an os 120ax and after cutting holes for the whole head, whole muffler, and 3 different types of baffles I was still overheating. i do fly in close to 100 degree heat m ost of the time

RE: Seagull Yak?
Well I've been moving the CG slowly back, Its about 1/4" behind the wind tube and thats were its staying.
This is still ahead of the recomended location by quite a bit.
