I needed a winter basher so I decided to pick up
a Giant Super Sportster .
I haven't read many negatives on this plane but I'd
sure appreciate some input from some people who
have them. If this thing needs upgrading I'd prefer
to do it before I start the assembly process.
(unlike what happened with my Pitts)

Hi Roby,
I ordered the Giant SS yesterday for my winter project , will be using a Saito 220 on it. You will pick up some good info by searching the threads for "giant sportster". There was a lot of discussion about the various engines being used but most comments were positive. I have flown the smaller 40 and 60 size sportsters, great fliers. Dick Pettit of RC Report did a good review on the model. He had problems with the wheel pants but overall a positive review. Good luck on your build!

A friend in our club just bought one. He is a bit disappointed that he can't spin it and it is a bit "sheepish" compared to his smaller Sporster. I'm not sure if he has too much nose weight or overly low control rates. Flew very nice, but not overly aerobatic.

Soooo. I guess I would recommend the largest suggested engine, far extreme for C.G. point and as much throw as you can coax out of the control surfaces.

There is a good thread on this plane here on RCU. Several of them were either having to rebuild or beef up the rudder and the elevators because they were shreded. I got a Hanger P-47 instead.
If you are going to bash it anyway, then it may not be that big a deal to reinforce the tail feathers.

I have one that I purchased last fall. At that time there were reports on RCU about the stab breaking off so I added flying wires to mine. I have not had any problems. The most recent posts don't talk about this problem; may have been a problem with the earlier units. I originally had a Magnum 160 twin in mine, just because I had the engine. Flew ok; a little underpowered. I now have a Magnum 180 FS and it flies much better. This is a heavy plane. This is a very stable plane to fly. I fly it like I do my 1/4 scale cub, very relaxing( that is where the 160 twin wound up). A fun plane to do touch and goes.

I plan on running the Saito 220 on my giant sportster, is this too much engine? Manual suggests up to 200 fs. Also, what servos are you guys running, this is a big plane and don't want to put puny servos on those big surfaces!

Yup, saw that thread.

Decent information but not what I was looking for .

Now that I received mine yesterday and I've had a chance to
look at it, I'm coming to my own conclusions, none of which
are addressed in that thread.

It has issues but the bang for the buck is mostly there.

Should have it in the air in a couple of weeks.

Well it's in the air . It fly's pretty good and should
do ok serving only as a winter basher that it was
originally intended to be.

For sure,it seems that some quality issues associated with
ARF's will apparently never go away.
