lear,
I'm curious as to whether or not you set the throws as described in the instructions or not. The elevator especially looks like it could use a little more than prescribed. I have been waiting for the weather to clear up here so I can maiden mine....right now it's just a real pretty paperweigt for my shop table. Another guy in a club that I belong to South of here flew his about a week ago and absolutely loves it. Says it flies very smooth and clean.

I was going to put a Tower 75 in her, but I have been going back and forward between the Tower 75, Evolution 52 (weught), or the OS 55. What is the CG like. Are people have to add weight to nose or tail. Did little homework on motors weight on based from Horizon and Tower.
Evolution 46- 16.96 oz total w/muffler
Evolution 52- 14.5 oz without muffler
OS 46- 17.2 oz w/muffler
OS 55- 18.52 oz w/ muffler
OS 61- 23.6 oz W/muffler
OS 75- 26.46 oz w/muffler
Magum 52- 17 oz w/muffler
Thunder Tiger 61- 26.1 oz w/muffler
Satio 82- 17.6 oz w/muffler
Satio 100- 20.9 oz w/muffler (case someone wants to upgrade on 4 strokes)
Tower Hobby 75- 23 oz w/muffler
Evolution 46- 16.96 oz total w/muffler

OS 46- 17.2 oz w/muffler

With the TT Pro .46, placed the battery just barely behind the wingtube and the receiver just behind the fuel tank. Balance was dead on 2 1/2 inches. Ended up putting an aluminum spinner on after the fact and made it just a tad noseheavy, but not enough to worry about. Moved the battery back about 1/4 inch and it rebalanced dead on again. Don't know if that helps...

Thanks. according to Tower the TT 46 is 17.01oz. My goal is to shoot to put my Tower 75 on her and that is 6 oz heaiver than the TT 46. So I will try to move the battery back as far as can go to get dead on. Is there lots of room inside the fuse. I put my order in tonight so I do not have the plane yet.

It flies incredible. It flies alot like a pattern airplane. Very smooth and precise. I have mine balanced at 3" and it seems pretty happy there. I have the control throws set at the recommended throws and have found that the "High Rates" are best. The elevator has plenty (believe it or not) on hi rates. You will not be dissappointed with it.

there is another thread on this plane in extreme props. Here is a link http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_67...tm.htm#7031545
I went to tower 75 but I ran into problem when I came to installing the muffler. I will have to go to pitt style.

Got a chance to finally fly mine today. WOW, great flying plane. Very predictable and smooth. Ground handling was very good and it took off very nice and clean. The only thing I would have to say is that if you have set up the throws as recommended in the manual, you may want to consider bumping up the elevator just a little. The first time I came in for landing I almost ran out of elevator. I kept a little speed under it just to be safe and it was a good thing I did. On the next flight I bumped the throws up just a bit and it came in with a lot less speed and settled in very nice.
If anyone is considering moving up to the bigger version of the Sundowner sometime in the near future, be advised that these two planes don't necessarily fly the same. The bigger version has a high wing loading and flies a little bit different, although it flies very well also.
The 50 size is a great airplane and I am very happy with it. I set the high rates a little higher as well and tried as hard as I could to get it to snap, it never did. Once the engine breaks in and I can get the RPM's and speed up it should be even more fun.
We are thinking of starting a racing class in this area using the Sundowner as a mid range class between what we are calling a "Sport", (entry level), class and a Sport Q-500 class. If all goes well it should be a real hoot.

I am very interested in this plane. I read that alot of people are using the tower 75 engine with a pitts exhaust. Are these engines reliable? I had a tower 46 a few years back and it never ran right. The other engine I was looking at is the Saito 82, how would that engine pull this plane around? From the vidoes I have seen of this plane flying it looks like it has the same flight characteristics of a Shoestring. Sweet looking plane.

Here are a couple of pics of an OS 75 AX install. I used a GP mount and centered it with the centerlines on the firewall. I installed a Slimline pitts exhaust shown in pics. There is enough room to allow a remote glow but I chose to just drill a hole for the igniter. I have not performed a CG check yet but should be able this weekend. I had this engine in a GP revolver that met it's demise already. No CG problems with it at all. These planes are similar. The Sundowner 50 has a smaller chord on the wing and smaller control surfaces. I think it is suited for speed much more than the Revolver which was a great sport plane. I did have to cut out about half the cowl on it to fit the 75AX though.

Chris I think I am the only one using the Tower 75. I love the motor. Once you set the low and high needles correct you will have a nice running motor. I have this motor also in my Nitro Plane Bocat and it kicks some serious butt. I plan to fly this Sundowner 2morrow if the weather is right. Hope my buddy show up and I do some video

I started with a 14x6 on the Revolver and going with a 13x10 on this plane now I have some fuel through the motor. I am planning on trying a 12x12 if all goes well.

ok here is the link to the video of me flying the sundowner yesterday. Was doing some racing with another guy who was cheating big and cutting the turns early. Overall I had a blast. I was running with a 12x8 prop. I have am 11x9 amd 11x10 I going to try the next time the bird goes in the air. Link to video is below.

Great video Pat. Anyone flown one yet with a 55ax in it? I have read that people intend to use this engine but havent read anything about if that engine is a good match with this plane or not.

hey patzane, watched your video of the sundowner. that field looked very famillier to me. is that the amps field in az?i spend a lot of time there in the winter and learned how to fly there 2 years ago. my dad is a member of amps. looks like a nice plane-engine combo. had that 75 t.h. engine on a revolver . lot of fun. nice video.

Finally got to fly mine Saturday ! Very smoooooth flying plane ! Nothing like I expected.... took off well not much rudder input needed at all. Once in the air we got her trimmed out and it was on rails. Not as fast as I wanted but we are running a new Saito 82 and had it a little rich, also had the recomended break in prop on it. After a few more flights we'll tune it up put a little faster prop on her. Should cook then ! Lands very well, I did, as stated in earlier posts, add a little more elevator as it seemed to run out just at touch down. This gives me some room for error......And I need it ! Over all good ARF, mine may not be as fast as the Little Tony or "ss" Minnow, But it will be fast enough for me.

russm you are correct. It is the AMPS field. Great field and we flying 24\7 there.
Well I flew the sundowner today with a 11x9 prop. It was not as fast as the 12x8 that I had on her before. I am not a big masterscrew prop person but I put a 11x6 on the 75 and got 13,890 RPM on the ground. I will try that 2morrow and maybe try a 11x7 masterscrew to see it I can get her over 14,000.

One of the guys in our club has done some nice changes to his Sundowner. We are putting the final touches on the rules for using these for a racing class and he wants to make good and sure that he can tell which one is his. It turned out very nice and will definitely be easy to see which one is his in the air.
