Default DP Ultimate 1.20 wing question.

How do you transport your DP Ultimate 1.20? Are the wings designed to be removed for transport and attached at the field or is the plane designed to always have the wings on? Is there a latch mechanism or something? Having to screw on the wings with metal screws every time is not what I would call 'designed for removal/attachment'. I ask because I need to get a plane that I can remove the wings for tranport and storage and it looks like there is no easy way to do this on the DP Ultimate 1.20.

Thanks

They attach with 8 cap head screws, 4 on each side. Also, two with nuts in the center attaching the top wing to the cabanes. Oh, almost forgot two nylon bolt attachments securing the bottom wing to the fuse.

So it looks like your looking for a different plane - or bigger transport vehicle? :-)

Damn damn damn... damn. I guess on the plus side it helps me narrow down which plane I'm going to get. Damn, I really liked this plane too. Damn. How do you carry the plane around then? You really have a vehicle that has 60" of cargo width? I mean, I have a station wagon with ~75" of length but not width.

Welcome to the world of Bipes. I got a Goldberg Ultimate (basically same plane as DP) and while I LOVE flying the plane; I HATE the time it takes to put it together.

Just to get this straight, are any of those screws you have to screw and unscrew screwing into wood/balsa, or do they screw into nuts? I think I could live with the (diss)assembly time as long as I felt I wasn't putting extra wear and tear on the plane.

Default DP Ultimate 1.20 wing question.

sizam,

The bolts on the outside of the wings which secure the wing to the vertical strut screw into blind nuts which are attached to the vertical strut. The bolts insert into aluminum studs which protrude from the wing. These studs are used during initial setup to acquire the proper wing alignment by screwing them into the wing to the correct depth. Once set, they are left alone and only used to fasten the wing to the vertical strut. The two cap bolts that fasten the top wing to the cabanes use nylon insert lock nuts.

I've had mine ever since it was first introduced and haven't had a problem with worn out attachments. Great plane which I fly every year and I do disassemble for the trip to the field.

Hope this helps.

Mike

I know you've read a lot of good stuff about this plane, but I have to stress - it is one awesome flying machine. Really makes you look better than you are.

good luck
