Default question about flaps....

Hello guys....

I have been flying helis for a while and I started now with an HANGAR 9 mustang... it's really cool, I did not use the wheel brakes, I am just using the plastics that go on the wings and I fixed the flaps DOWN. I got familiar to fly pretty well very fast (according with the people in my club) at the third flight I was able to do circuit inverted, loops, rolls, passing at some feets on the track, I really like it.

What happens if I leave the flaps fixed at the other position? I mean at the same level than the wing. I guess I would get more speed. I want to start practicing some landing (the guys in my club told me I am ready). Is it better to try with the flaps close down or open at the same level of the wings????? I think the guys at the club told me that the plane would have more chances of tipping at the front while loosing speed and trying to land... does it mean it's better to have the flaps open to the same level wing position????

Thanks!

You're going to increase your airspeed/landing speed and you're going to have to retrim the aircraft a little because with the flaps down it probably wants to climb at higher speeds. If you raise the flaps, it'll not do that so much and it'll sink faster at slow speeds.

Keep things simple as you're learning and don't use the flaps just yet. Flaps do provide lots of lift, but they also produce lots of drag. Drag might be a bad thing especially if you're just learning. Landing in a nutshell goes something like this, reduce your altitude with your throttle and keep the nose up with the elevator. Find the slope your plane likes and commit to landing if everything is good. Just before touch down, flare a bit with pulling on the elevator and reduce the throttle to idle just before touch down.

Sounds a lot easier than it looks.
