Default servos for 1/5 scale.?

Hey guys, I'm assembling my first 1/5 scale, the GP P6e Hawk Bi-Plane. The manual calls for servos with a min of 54oz torq. Can someone recommend a good servo, I have Futaba equipment. Also, my 3004's form my 60size planes say they give 58oz with a 6v battery, can i just upgrade rec/batt...? Thanks

With larger torque ratings, come larger stronger gear trains and motors. Don't rely on the 6V torque ratings of servos. That number is 'bonus torque', I would say, for an already strong servo. I like to use the Hitec 645MG. It has well over 100 oz of torque (at 4.8), metal gears, and can be found all day for under $30. Great for the rudder on a tail dragger, among other things. Beyond that, although I use JR, hear are my thoughts on larger planes.

Throttle-if gas, 5-pole or digital standard servo
Choke-same
Ailerons- (2 servos)-120 oz each or better, (4 servos)-60 oz each or better
Rudder- 100oz metal gear or better
Elevators- (split) 80oz metal gear or better

The tail can take a beating on tail draggers hence the metal gears.

I like the JR Sport 125MG for my larger airplanes 1/4 J-3, Pac Aero Clipped Wing Monocoupe, Ikon N'West Monocoupe D-145, Cox 1/5 Scale WACO, RC Guys Super Decathelon but I'm not a 3D type. Not too expensive and plenty of torque w/ 4.8 volts. I was planning on using them on my Hawk, until someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse and I sold it. Good luck w/ yours.

Yes. All. Whatever the brand, look at the torque at 4.8, and the composition of the gears. For sport flying, speed is not as important. And you can get all the torque and gear train strength you need these days in a standard size case and weight. No need, IMO, for the large oversize heavy servos of yesterday. I fly all my giant scale ( 25%, 33%, 35%,and soon 40%), with standard size servos of various strengths depending on the control it is pushing.
