Ok, So my R170 doesn't exactly fit on my Goldberg Sukhoi FW.
First off, I wondering if the orientation of this engine is a big deal. It looks like it would be a nice fit in the cowl inverted, Upright is not a big deal, Just a little cutting. 90 degrees clockwise also seems like a good fit and this orientation does not require any FW mods. Or engine mount modifications.
My latest thought is to fasten some good stock to the engine mount feet. This will allow me to thru-bolt to the firewall. Otherwise Im looking at building up the firewall and going with some blind nuts, Since the horizontal dimension (center to center) of the mounting holes exceed the diameter of the firewall.
At this point Im liking the idea of modifying the engine mount bolt holes.
In these pics you can see the different orientations of the engine. The firewall also has 2 vertical lips on the left and right side. You will notice that the bolt holes of the mount are directly over this lip if the engine is positioned upright or inverted, making thru bolting impossible, regardless of whether or not the FW is modified. Again, this is why modification of the Mounting feet sounds good to me.
Just looking for some general input.
Thanks, Pete

The engine is very smooth so I would get a 1/4" aluminum plate mount the engine to, then mount the plate to the firewall using 1/2" wood spacers. The engine should run fine no matter how you orient it, but #1 down would expose it to the ground on a hard landing, and it will look odd. They sale flex exhaust pipes for it so you can git all the pipes out the bottom, unless oil dripping off everything doesn't bother you. I loved mine in my bipe, just couldn't hack the mess, and I had the exhaust out the bottom.

the 1/4 " aluminum bolted to the motor mount sounded good. For some reason I can't seem to wrap my Head around the bracket setup. I need a shorter distance between bolt holes in order to make the firewall. The brackets don't seem to do that.... Or do they? Am I missing something?
The exhaust ring sounds really nice but I'm sure I could make something up alot cheaper. I was thinking of using a glaring tool on some brake line tubing. I'm pretty sure the exhaust has many alternatives.
Thanks guys!!

Pete,
I had a similar problem as you did with my 300 twin. My problem was more with the height than width, plus I needed to extend the mount out 1/2"
I laminated two pieces of 1/4" aircraft ply together, countersunk the blind nuts in from the back on the lower part for the engine and used the other two as normal blindnuts in the firewall. I think you could do the same with a wider piece of ply to suit you needs.
Otherwise the aluminum plate also sounds like a good idea.
The Keleo exhaust is a superb piece of workmanship, I would seriously consider it.

Thanks for the help gunfighter. That's a really nice setup.
I managed to get it rigged up today with the aluminum. Looks like it has a good bite, So I'll go with it.
