One of the things that I do to save a few bucks on ARF models is to just buy the components (Wing, Fuse,Tail) instead of the full kit. This works well if you fly similar sized ARF's.

I try and re-use fuel tanks, landing gear, wheels, etc. These parts rarely go "bad" and can live to fly again. You can save about $30 on and average ARF.

Have you priced the Horizon ARF parts these days? The wings alone are running half or more of the price of the full ARF.

The Great Planes ARF "parts" are cheaper than the "whole" kit as they should be. I rarely buy anything from Horizon so no I haven't priced them. Sounds like a "Rip-Off" to me.

I know exactly what you mean, Jerry, having spent my entire USAF tour at Gila Benda and Luke AFB's.

I sent an email to horizon saying that i was thinking about ordering some stuff, but because of all the bad pulicity about their price increases, I had changed my mind and will instead order from Tower (who aren't much better when it comes to price increases). I got a reply from horizon and I would post it here, but unfortunately i sent it from my work email which i can't access from home. I'll post it when I get to work on Monday (if i remember ). But basically it said that the price increases are caused by increasing prices from their suppliers so they have to be passed on to their customers.

Why doesn't Horizon do a better job managing their suppliers?

I have to say that very little of the Great Planes/Tower ARF lineup appeals to me. The TF stuff is pretty good. I do have and like the TF Giant scale Staggerwing and just got the TF B-25.

However, their range of warbirds and scale civilian models mostly does not measure up to Horizon and H9. That new GP Cherokee is too semi scale to be interesting...it looks like a low wing ugly stick.

Frankly, I think the Horizon ARFs are selling faster and with more demand than most of the Great Planes/TF lineup.....this will postpone the GP price increases for a while...

I talked to one of the 'bosses' at Horizon about 4-5 months ago and he said then the supply of WORKERS was a serious problem and the cost (if you could find it) of Balsa was skyrocketing - that was almost 1/2 year ago! Now I know what he was trying to say..................

Tower hobbies increased their arf prices a few months ago before horizon did. Horizons is a much higher increase though.. I dont get it.. Funatana x50 259.99 ......Funtana x100 219.99 ... That DOES not make sense.. 33% su26 sukhoi... 999.99!!!!

I have the x100 myself and love it..Test flew a x50 for a guy in the club and flew nothing like the 100... At that price you may as well buy the 100..

The US just needs to find a new 3rd world country. Forget China and India. I want a cheap ARF and I'm willing to pay any hard working kid .30 cents/hour to build it.

On a related note, are the Tower Hobbies brand 4-channel radios more expensive than the equivalent Futaba radio? I saw the prices in the latest Tower Talk.

I think I know why the prices went up.
It's a simple reason.
Season.
Just like in the summer pools cost $400 while in the Winter they'll cost $150
Wait until Christmas and pack your garage full of ARF's and sell them during summer to make a profit!

that comment is why the rest of the world hates us. we sit in our complancey and think the rest of the world is here to serve us. i'm guilty too. i have nothing against immigrants coming into this country and but what i resent is they can tap into our social security that they never paid into and collect ss benefits.......now where were we??....something about the rising cost of arfs?

I think those 'over there' got a taste of the 'good life' (AKA USA) and wanted more - can't blame 'em either: I like it here
