Default another EDF rookie

EDF rookie here ~ you guys are sick of seeing it, i'm sure ... well, i'm an air force brat and watched and flew real f15 sims and have been hooked for life.
got old hours with gas (even wire - anyone remember those ribbon days ?? ) but now going EDF (my son is ecstatic) ...
i'm not worried about fast craft - can fly - worried about the fear-factor batteries ! also, seems electrical engineering is another hobby to pick up quick ... looking at the RTF Starmax f/a18 Blue - COOL, fast and exciting, comes complete from Nitro (sans charger, what the ... ?). I fully expect that advertised "30 minutes out of the box" is 100% unattainable ... BUT would like to test and balance, charge right, trim and weight, etc ... no battery meltdowns or in-flight fires ! motor specs are loose, chat with Nitro was fruitless ...
ANY advice boys ? is there a blog on systems/mechanical diagnostics for EDF build-out > (i expect included manuals to be Engrish...)
thanks flyers !!

Are you saying you can fly the real thing but have no experience with RC jets, but asume you can just fly one?
Its not going to happen,if you dont have plenty of RC flying, maybe its just the way I am reading this post.Typicaly, many of the products from Nitro are considered lower quality.Much extra attention is likely required, just to give you a heads up.There is an EDF section here on RCU.
Try a post there.

why 'the dark side' tIANci ... ? BTW, nice collection ... your 2 smaller fighters look like what i have in mind.

nitro wing - yes on all counts. have old RC (maybe 15years ago) experience, as well as real flight time and government simulators (yes, i flew the f15 sim at langley).
have built many models and machines ... just never a foamie electric jet airplane !
just looking for proactive troubleshooting tips ... the battery charger is scary to me, not flying fast.

will look into EDF threads ... thanks much boys !!

Jon ... we call the EP heads the DarkSide ... heheheehee ... you will enjoy EDFs. They are different in how they fly and its just mainly that there is no idle, when you turn you need to keep the speed up or use more elevator if not she will lose altitude ... that's about it. As for chargers and batts do not worry, they hardly ever explode. Hardly ... Wow you are lucky to be able to fly the REAL sim ... I envy you.
