Default 91FZ on a WM .40 P-51?

I got my first YS engine(FZ91) and am itching to try it out. I have a WM P-51 ready to go less an engine. Am I crazy, or will it work? The Saito 72 that I had in the plane made for great scale speed, but I was looking for more. Any thoughts? I have a Extreme RC 65" Extra on order but it will not be in until the end of June. I plan on using the YS or my Saito 100 in that plane, but I really want to see what this YS is like.

Go for it, try a 15X8 or 14X10 and get out the radar gun

You will need to add tons of tail weight to the plane. I have a feeling it will be at least 10 ounces.

So basically I would be flying a high speed brick with weak main gear!

We use the very same combo for our Warbird races locally. Excellent combination, all up weight is usually around 7-7.5lbs. with stock configuration. The Mustang holds up very well without any specific issues although the landing gear struts can be a problem with rough landings

You'll need to move the battery pack to the rear of the fuse, most of the time I put them under a NEW hatch door hidden under the oil cooler empanage. Balance is easily achievable from here on.

Use a 12/13N APC on YS 20/20 with an OS F glow plug, should see around 9000rpm. Hold on its a great flying and fast model. When you get used to it up the fuel to 45% Nitro and your in for some serious fun...

Not necessarily. I ran a G90 with a 12/9 APC on mine for over a year until a battery failed. It now rests comfortably in a Shoestring. If you know how to land, you should be okay. Also consider slapping some epoxy in and around the retract mounting blocks. I do this on all my planes with retracts.
When my P-51 went in at 100mph, that thing was scattered everywhere but those retracts were still mounted in the blocks!

I considered using a YS .91AC in my WM Mustang, but the anticipated high wingloading and landing speeds scared me off. (our field is on the short side, and quite rough)

I went with a Saito .91 instead. Not as much power as the YS, but its 10 oz. lighter! Went in with no balancing mods needed at all.

It kicks butt with an APC 11x12!

I also have a Saito 100 on the bench that might be a better option considering wing loading and the fact that our club has a fairly short field.

Wing loading is not a a problem. We have had collectively 100's of these models equipped for racing as I mentioned above. Our primary racing field's runway is 400' long, no problem at all.

I made a mistake in my earlier post the typical weight is 6.5-7lbs.. The manual suggests 6lbs. with a 46 engine, the 91 FZ's weigh about 10ozs. more than an OS 46FX. AT 585 square inches of wing area and 7lbs. wing loading is 27.6oz per square foot of wing area, this is nothing guys especially for a WARBIRD. No additional weight is needed to balance these models. Were assembling two of the WM Candyman right now for my son's primary and back-up racers. I'll weigh them when completed to verify the all up weight.

Mike,

Thanks for the input. Will the stock engine mount hold up with a 91 up front? What are you using as far as engine mount and fuel tank. That 91 will be a bid thirstier.

We use the stock mount without the center piece sections.

14-16oz Sullivan seamless tanks mounted on CG.

The servo tray is mounted to the rear of the wing saddle area.

The battery is located under the oil cooler empanage in the fuse in an opening that we make. It's hidden by the oil cooler when the model is assembled.

We also use an epoxy slurry mixture around the gear mounts.
A wye push-rod to the elevator halves. Make sure all your linkages are strong and slop free. Basically our models are completely stock, no modifications for CG or anything else.

Have fun.

Well it's ready to go! I got the 91 installed after running a couple of tanks on the stand. It balanced right on the money after mounting the elevator servo under the stab and moving the battery to the tail. Put a 14oz tank over the CG and mounted a 14x10 APC. The motor was tuning a 15x8 on 20/20 at 8500 after two tanks! Hopefully get it out this weekend. It should zip right along now.

Default YS and Dago Red

Hey Guys!

A big thanks to Mr. Glavin!! As he is the WM Mustang expert that help me set up my Dago with the YS 91.
I have the exact set up that he mentioned above. I'm running Morgan 30%heli fuel and getting 10,500 rpm on the ground.
I've been flying this set up for about a year, and having a ball!
Everyone at the field commented that this set up is one of the fastest sport planes they had ever seen.
I just sold the 91 FZ and will soon have a 110 FZ 12X14apc as it's replacement. I cant wait! I think the 110 is lighter too.

Thanks again to Mr. Galvin!

Jeremy Smith
