RE: Quality of Vinh Quang and Model Tech ARF's
i bought a model tech arf on sale clearance from hobby people over a year ago . it was a .40 size sukhoi 26. when it arrived i noticed the box looked very old. indeed it was a old arf not manufactured anymore. but it was very well built and covered. i'm still flying it and it seems to better than some of the newer arfs i have when it comes to quality. but this plane is many years old and i'm not sure about model techs quality now with their newer planes.

RE: Quality of Vinh Quang and Model Tech ARF's
I purchased the small .32 Extra 300S Model Tech sells...
I was underwhelmed...
The belly pan, cowl, pilot, canopy area and wheel pants were horrible plastic.
The cowl was two sizes too large. The pilot was unpainted and not even cut from the mold.
The belly pan was thin plastic.
The plane flew great though until the mount separated at the firewall.... I still have it and fly it, but if I were to do it again, I would pass...
That said we have a couple of the little 3D planes Model Tech sells at our field, which are very simply constructed and people seem to have fun with them...

well..i've noticed over years that some companies arfs were built better years ago before the demand went way up. a lot of companies arfs have gone down in quality in the last few years. some of my favorites!. there has been a few threads started in this forum about this subject.

RE: Quality of Vinh Quang and Model Tech ARF's
modeltech dragonlady-great-built well and tough and covered in monocoat, VQ really disappointing with some guy they call Dom or Don (a vietnamese guy) that would not stand good on a broken P-51 right out of the box bought here in Houston at a LHS. He would not return my calls or the LHS and tried to give me a replacement wing off from another P-51 that was covered in a different color and scheme and he passed the message on thru the LHS this was acceptable-
I do not totally understand the relationships between Vinn Quang models and VQ models-I was told that a guy in Bryan Texas bought purchased VQ models from the the same vietnamese guy and then Dom or his family unvieled Vinn Quang models with a little name change and kept on going. But this was told to me by a third party and I do not know to be true or not but if someone knows the real story I would willing to listen. VQ models in Bryan Texas is a stand-up guy and does care about his customers

Tomas at VQ is the best at customer service. That said, my only experience with a VQ was the P-38. Only thing nice I can say is Tomas is really great to deal with and does all he can to try and correct problems.
Sold the thing to somebody here at RCU, for half of what I had in it.
That said, I believe there might have been a bad run on these, as I've talked to a couple of folks who had the same exact problems with their's.
Other then my experience, I've heard a lot of good with them.
Tell you what, look up my buddy Al, aka SCALEFAN, over on RCG, I think he's built everything VQ has put out. He could give you a good idea of quality.
Oh and make fun of him like I do. He tends to build two of everything. I don't think he's yet had a maiden go right. 1st/2nd/3rd/4th flights all seem to work out with the second build

RE: Quality of Vinh Quang and Model Tech ARF's
Thanks for the input guys/girls. I might as well take the chance on one of them. It seems that almost ever ARF manufacturer has issues at one time or another. The latest issues I've had was with a Twist .40 motor mount blind nuts being oblong...... Horizon did make it right so it's all good.

I have a Modeltech P47. It had a brittle nylon block that shattered like glass where the tail wheel assembly is supposed to be bolted to. Replaced it with a Sullivan unit and no other problems. The plane is well built and easy to fly. It gets lots of attention at the field. The weight is very acceptable considering it is a decent 60 size plane.

RE: Quality of Vinh Quang and Model Tech ARF's
I'm considering getting the VQ Mig-3 or the VQ P-40 Warhawk. Any opinions on either of these planes would be appreciated. This will (not technically) be my 1st warbird, I have a Spitfire and a L-4 in the shop still being put together/repaired. I always thought it would be really, really cool to go up w/ my dad and fly our warbirds together and now I have a chance to finally do it. My dad had named me after the Curtiss P-40 Warhawks' Allison v12 engine (Also used in the North American P-51 Mustang and the Lockheed P-38 Lightning) he was working on at the time, he used to be an aircraft mechanic. So, warbirds have always been something that we both know and love. And 12 years later I'm a diehard Warbird lover, WWI, WWII, etc. I love them all ! Thanks.

RE: Quality of Vinh Quang and Model Tech ARF's
VQ ARFs are comparable in quality to most other brands available. The covering is a strange vinyl adhesive backed system that wrinkles and bubbles if you just look at it, but causes no problems that are not encountered with other heat-shrink coveringsdon't use heat on the VQ covering, it will take care of itself.
Retracts supplied by VQ are serviceable, but I'd recommend upgrading.
The tongue at the centerline of the leading edge of the wing is of a softer wood. I used some wing tape to pad the slot in the fuselage bulkhead slot since mine has worn a bit (looks like vibration has caused charring), but have seen others drill a hole(s) in the bulkhead and add dowel(s) to the wing.
Otherwise, they fly great. And, Tomas at VQ Warbirds is a truely good person to do business with.
