HOBBIE-STAR 60 Mk-ll suggestions?
Hi Gang,
I think I tired of the little Avastar and the minor mods I made to it.
Now I spoted this big 60 trainer with an 65LA OS engine and a airfoil like the Avastar.
I don't want to get into the big planes that go to fast so I thought this trainer will do a little better then the Avastar and I still have a bigger plane that I can still do some areo bactics and not have to fly it at 75+ MPH.
After I get a good feel for it then i'll convert it to a tail dragger and get rid of the large nose wheel that grabs a lot of air.

What kind of suggestions are you looking for? The Hobbistar is a very good 60 size trainer and the LA65 is a good engine for it.

I converted mine to taildragger and took out most of the dihedral out of the wing. Its a lot more fun this way. It down right now for a recovering job. That shelf paper covering on mine didn't last too long.

Keeps me from trying to make the smaller Avistar do what a bigger trainer with a symmetrical wing can do

Durable covering/
I recovered 2 planes with monoKote but next time I think i'll go with fabric
The picture shows my Avistar with a tail wheel and the wing recovered.
I no longer have the patience with monoKote.
Take notice there is no dihedral and it flies very good.

The HobbiStar 60 is a very smooth flyer sorta like a pattern plane.
I really enjoyed mine until the receiver failed

I see your call:-)
FiX or replace the RX.
I sure like to get it and I have the money but $400.00 and no MonoKote.
Do you think you noitice that much more preformence compared to the big .46 trainer from TH?
The very 1st thing I spotted were the nice looking wing tips

How much time did you get from the covering on that bird?

I like the Hobbistar very much, but, it is not really much of a step "up" in capability from your Avistar.
Mine crashed due to my stupidity; battery connection not secured well and it vibrated loose. Unfortunately it was in a nose down attitude and it crunched like an accordian when it hit.
I replaced it with a Global Right Flyer 60H from Hobby People. Same size, within an inch or two, and already has a wing with very little dihedral. The Right Flyer has iron on covering but the brand is unknown. It is white but it is not the same color as Monokote or Ultracoat white.
One great thing about these trainers is that you can make modifications if you want and they still fly great.

I got good service from the sticky back shelf paper covering on the Hobbistar. It last'd a couple years and about 100 flights before it augured in. As I was approaching the accident scene I was thinking why only the front of the fuselage is damaged but the wing was a bag of sticks when I picked it up. The covering only broke around the front of the fuselage.
I had another sticky back covering plane that lasted for 6 years until someone shot me down by turning their transmitter on. It was a H9 Super Stick 60. One thing that never gave any trouble was the covering.

Many flyers who are into the big $$$$$$$ money planes think your a newbie because you fly a trainer.
I enjoy flying them and doing some mods
Also like my helies,
I took my time and it's been close to 2 years and I only crashed one.
So far all I use are brushed motors and no head holding gyros
What I do like about the 60 trainer is that it has the ball bearing servos so I guess you pay a little more for that and the bigger engine
One thing I noticed about this hobby is when I pick up the phone to order 1 item I end up ordering $500.00 worth of other things when all I wanted was the glow starter with the built in meter:-)
It's that I really don't need it but I have to have it syndrome
It's fun spending money until you look in the refrigerator

Clear packing tape I guess can be used for covering if needed.'I used it for patching and it holds up good even under the fuel spills.

sticky back MonoKote trim sheets work well to patch little holes on these non MonoKote - non Ultracote planes
The color match is pretty good. Notice the very back of the fuselage on my Super Stick where I destroyed the rear of the fuselage when I hit a big round hay bail

I thought you had already bought the Hobbistar.
Hobby People = http://www.hobbypeople.net
EDIT
Sorry for the wild goose chase... Hobby People no longer has the Right Flyer 60 listed.

I always had a suspicion that the Hobbistar and the Right Flyer were both made by the "Big Model Airplane" company in Taiwan. That are not exactly alike but they sure remind you of the other. The H9 Super Sticks are engineered a lot like the HobbiStar also. They even have the same motor mount. It may be Super Model Airplane I cannot remember?

I'll use that servo, epoxy, prop, etc eventually.
And, it was actually "free."
Yeah, right.
