OK all you smart guys. Do you think an OS48 FS will pull a PT17 around or will be under powered and a wasted effort?

I put a Magnum .61 4-stroke on mine. It flies quite nicely with this engine.

The plane handles well on the ground and in the air. Landings are gentle with just a touch of power on final and flares nicely for a 3 point landing.

BTW, here is a picture of my Kyosho Stearman. As you can see I've converted from the Army version to the Navy version. This particular plane is modeled after the Stearman flown by Cdm. Harmon Rabb on JAG.

I think Todd is asking if anyone knows if this plane will fly OK with and OS 48 fs engine. I think he has a 48 he wants to sink in the plane.

Anyone know how the 48 might compare to the power of the 52? Is it close enough to work?

Thanks for clearing that up for me ABORH. That is exactly what I meant. Im sure the OS 52 would do a great job, but I dont have an OS52. I have an OS48. So if anybody knows the answer I sure would appreciate the info.

Todd,

While I don't have an OS48 in my Stearman I do have the 52. I can say the 52 does fly the plane nicely. There is plenty of power for aerobatics and most times it's flying way too fast for scale speed even at 3/4 throttle. It's nice to have the extra power to pull you through the manuevers.

I suspect with a 48 the Stearman will fly in a very scale-like manner. Takeoffs will not be a problem and you may need to enter a shallow dive for loops but this would be like the real thing. If you are desparate for more power then you can up the nitro to 30% (I've been doing this with almost all my 4 strokes now with no ill effects) providing you increase the prop diameter a bit and reduce the pitch. You don't need speed to fly the plane, just power and a lower pitch will give you that.

IIRC OS dropped the 48 to produce the 52 and I can't see there would be a whole lot of difference between the two other than a few HP points.

All in all the 52 is more than enough engine to fly the Stearman so the 48 should work well for you.

Thanks Jeff,
Now all I have to do is save my allowance and go get me a Stearman.
