Can a Phoenix Sonic 25 low wing handle short grass fields?
Around here there's lots of open fields with mowed grass but no good places to fly with paved runways. It's great for helicopters but I was thinking about getting back into planes and the Sonic 25 looks promising. For those who fly the Sonic 25, how well does it handle grass with the stock 2" wheels?
Thanks...
Thanks...

I fly the sonic 25 low wing from a grass field. The grass is kept very short almost like a green on a golf course. The sonic needs low grass to get up enough speed for take-off. The plane is very light, however, (about 4.5 lbs) so the take-off speed is kind of low also. As long as the grass is not too high, you should have no problem. The Sonic 25 is a great little plane, but it can change direction very fast and you can get into trouble very quickly if you are not careful.

The field I fly at doesn't have super short grass so I may have to get larger wheels. Thanks...

I put 2.25 inch tires on my sonic and it will lift off from the dirt strip in about 35 feet. The foam tires did not stand up to the pea gravel. Wish we had a grass strip. I put a .32 engine in mine and it realy moves out. Lots of fun for it's size.

I have a MDS .38 on mine and it will fly out of a hayfield. You didn't mention what engine you intend on using, but just go up 1/8-1/4" on the wheels and youshould be ok...........[8D]

I've only got a little Magnum GP .25 on there now so I bought some 3" wheels to help with powering through soccer field quality grass. I may back down to 2.5" if I can get away with it...
