Default H9 Clipped Wing Taylorcraft performance with FPE 2.4

I just flew my H9 Taylorcraft with a FPE 2.4 (40cc) gas engine, and it's GREAT!! This airplane previously had a Saito 1.50 in it, and the performance was very good. I just got tired of spending $30 a month on fuel.

Now it weighs about 1 lb. more than it did with the Saito in it (now 15.25 lbs.) But the performance of the engine more than makes up for it. The FPE IS NOT the most powerful 40cc gas engine out there, but it IS the lightest. With the standard ignition and one exhaust pipe plugged (for noise reduction) it spins my Mejzlik 19x10 at 6900rpm==> about 18 lbs of thrust (calc.) In real life, it doesn't have unlimited vertical, but it sure takes a while before it starts to putter out. With the CH ignition upgrade it should be truly unlimited (but I don't think it's worth the extra $100 for this plane.)

I was initially going to get a Zenoah G26---but after reading several threads about this combo I decided it would NOT be powerful enough. I was definitely RIGHT ! The plane is PERFECT with the 40cc gasser, and would have been WAY underpowered for my liking with the G26.

The FPE makes the plane fantastic !!

I'm fixing to do the same thingh to mine, what did you use to mount the engine, any kind of spacers or anti vibration washers, any info pass it on.

The f.P.E engine is awsome, I had it in my 300 extra and it flew great.

thanks

Sig Carriers spacers for the FPE 2.4. I had a friend cut some out on his band saw.

Setup is fairly easy with the side-mount carb. I used 1.25" lengths of hardwood dowels as spacers. On my third flight, I ran out of gas. I was still able to glide right in for a perfect landing. I used a 14 oz tank.......if I were to do it again I'd install a 16 oz tank. I ran out of gas going vertical about 15 minutes into the flight.......I like to fly 15-16 minutes.

What differences have you noticed with the extra pound to carry?

No noticable difference. I seem to fly faster now, but that's probably a function of the higher pitch prop: 19x10 (was 17x6 with the Saito.)
Landing is still slow. Very tame, easy to land bird.

I think I am going to use a Brison 2.4.... thanks for sharing your info about the FPE 2.4. I am looking forward to getting mine going. This will be a great relaxing bird for me when I don't feel like piloting my DP Ulty / YS 140 DZ. What servos did you use?
Thanks,
Shawn Stickney / Atlanta
