now thats prob the stupidist thing i have seen someone do with a model plane. while i doubt that it would have killed anyone if it got sucked into the engine and the engine failed (they were really close to the runway that model plane wasnt high at all, id guess 400-600 ft so they could have easily make it to the runway on one engine) it still would have cost the airline company some serious cash to replace.
and if for some crazy reason it did knock out the 1:1 and people died it would be seen as a act of terrorism and model airplanes might be banned off the face of the earth.
jail time...maybe... this guy is a idoit but im guessing he is one of those poeple who do things for show and never bothers to think about the conquences, if i could do anything i wouldnt throw him in prison, id throw him on an island in the middle of nowhere with plenty of food/water/shelter/model planes to last a few years. that way he couldnt do any harm.
no sence in making a criminal out of a idoit, if not island than HUGE fines, if not huge fines than jail.
i have had real airplanes/hellies (small ones no 737's) enter the flying pattern. all you have to do is drop throttle, glid till they are out of the way (loose altitude, if nessiary land), and resumb flying its not hard.

Unfortunatly - we are seeing things like this far too often. I belong to a MAAA (like AMA in Aus) and 1/2 of my membership goes in to pay for insurance. Fields are being encroached by ever expanding suburbs and more and more people complain about the noise of the engines. I sometimes think we have an uphill battle just to remain in this sport / hobby past the immediate future - then we get fools like this and this............. I have the latest copy of RCMN, and they printed a review of an electric Curtiss that they flew and reviewed in a parking lot. There is even a picture of the plane that crashed into a car parked there. The comment was "That was O/K because it was a company car and it wasn't even my company" How clever is that to put into a "responsible" National RC mag. Any wonder why we cop a bagging.

I saw it on the news last night - which does not prove that's its real - but what part of the "sounds fake" bit are you referring to. Do you actually believe that Tom Cruise was piloting a foamy and giving us commentary. Sheee - some peaple's comments make me crack up.

And here is this afternoons latest news about it

Yep - I agree that just because it is on the news, doesn't mean it is true but it still is a silly thing to post - even if it is 100% fake.

yeah this happend about a 45 min drive from my house the guy is an idiot full stop
i beleive that it is real because i herd about it from a few modlers before it was on the news
i dont beleive he put any lives at risk because a small parkflyer isnt going to stop a turbofan engine but i do think he put 100 000 s of $ at risk and for tht he should be getting some mega fines
as far as i know no one knows who was the rc pilot but they are looking for him
i hope to god this dosent effect us and out good old sunday flying
happy flying

Jimmyjames213,
Quite the contrary. Loosing an engine that close to the ground the pilot won't have time to adjust for the lost power and would probably crash.
Additionally, on one of the other Utube plays, the interviewee mentioned that the metal in that model plane could destroy the engine if it were ingested. This could have been very devastating.

One bird about the size of that model can distroy a jet engine, so it is quite possible that it could have caused an engine failure, it looks like he planned to try and get a jet on his camera. He should get jail time, it might just stop some other copy cat trying the same thing. Matt

Regardless of the models ability to damage the airliner, the guy has to be punished publicly. This type of activity is detrimental to our hobby and very likely to be duplicated. This guy is a victim of his low IQ, kind of feel sorry for him.

I work in the jet engine overhaul and repair industry and an engine ingesting any FOD can cause many millions of $$$$ damage and stop an engine cold. It's not very clear in the news reports if the model in question (I haven't seen the video) is e-powered or glow, but either source of power is made of metal. Let's say the model was sucked in and caused a piece of the front fan to liberate. That piece would more than likely go through the compressers, which in turn damages more parts which break and as they go through the engine causing greater and greater damage as it passes through the gas path. You wouldn't believe the damage an object the size of a penny can do. As far as I'm concerned, this so-called "modeler" has done a lot of unreversable damage to the R/C industry on the whole. Whatever punishment he gets won't be enough.

Edit: After watching it again...and again...
Looks like a dim witted moron who got spun in after the wing tip vortex got him [X(]
It could have been accidental (the near miss ) but whoever was flying the r/c plane really should have more sense than to fly that close to a full scale airport![:@]
The sound of the jet passing by sounds to me like it's part of the Top Gun sound track...
The athorities obviously don't share this guys "sense of humor" and if it was intentional, he oughta be tossed in the klink for a while...(some of the comments on YouTube are rather "colorful", aye!?[X(] )
