Is this the Magic Extra? If so, I just finished mine Tuesday night and flew it on Wednesday.......if you've done searches on here, everything you've read about some of the problems is true..they HAVE NOT been corrected! BUT...here's the good news....it flies awesome!!!! Had a blast with it last night....I think it's going to be the plane that comes out with me every time.....
Here's the main problems I had with it: The aileron pushrods were about 1/2" too short.....I had to use different ones. I was missing some bolts for the landing gear axles. The blind nuts in the firewall for the engine mount were about 3/32" off from what the holes in the mount were. Also, some of the white covering stripes on the bottom of the wing are starting to peel back a bit....I think I can correct this with an iron...but haven't tried quite yet.
There is a "product evaluation sheet" in the back of the manual, and I intend to send it in. Shame on Modeltech for not fixing these known problems that have been talked about on RCU for some time now. The should have their fingers on the pulse of the R/C community a little better and check out forums like this. I know that my kit was not old, as the hobby shop that I bought it at said they've sold quite a few.
All of that said, would I recommend one? Hell yes...it's a blast...I'm going to have a ball with it.....just be prepared for a little bit of extra work.

This is extra 300L 46-60 engine 49.5 wing.I think the one you are talking about is a 25-36 plane

tree, no, I'm talking about the 49.5" span plane, not the smaller extra 300.

I have the Modeltech Magic Extra. I put a Magnum .52 four stroke in mine. Balanced at 3.75"....I plan to move it back to 4"

I absolutely love it. No major assembly problems at all. Looks and flies like a dream. All the push rods fit perfectly and the covering is very well done. All the holes lined up perfectly. I don't think you can beat this plane for $119.00

a couple notes: The elevator push rod assembly instructions were backwards. The instructions included steps for drilling and installing the wing hold down blind nuts and the engine mount blind nuts - well, mine were already installed - NOT a problem here.

If the covering begins to peel back just use a little clear nail polish to glue/hold it down.

cwat, glad to hear you didn't have any trouble with yours....my wing hold down blind nuts were not installed, but I didn't have any problems installing those, but the firewall blind nuts were pre-installed, and unfortunately, didn't line up

I've got my CG right at 3.75", and it's still extremely stable...I'm going to move mine back a bit also...

I also noticed that the elevator instructions were backwards also....no biggie there.

Thanks for the tip with the covering, I'll try that!

cwat,

How's it fly with the Magnum 52 and what prop do you use? I've got an ASP 52 4 stroke laying around I haven't used yet...

I haven't started on my magic yet (bought it a couple of weeks ago), I'll have to dig it out soon..
The available engine's I have are 46FX, 46LA, Irvine 39 and the ASP....

It flies great with the .52 4stroke. I think it has plenty of power. Currently I have a 11x5 MA prop. I plan on picking up a 12x4 or 12x5 to see the difference.

A friend of mine has a TT.46 on his and it flies great also. I personally like the 4 strokes.

Tiggerinva, a "light" version of the Magic Extra sounds like a great flying machine with the Irvine 39. Does anyone think it would be possible to balance the plane with a lighter engine, possibly by moving the battery as far foreward as possible???

Thanks,

Ernie

I think I'll go with the Irvine 39 on mine... I like the idea of color coordination...

Looks like my 'heavy duty' radio gear (JR 811 digital servos and 1100mah batt) will be going into a H9 Funtana (saw it at the LHS and it jumped into my arms ) so I'm thinking of making the airpack lighter too by using minis...

The Irvine is a couple of ounces lighter than a 46FX and almost as powerful, hopefully I can make it balance...

You can definitely put the battery pack and reciever forward, there is a nice compartment there, but you will probably need extensions for the servos and battery.......If you're using a flat 4.8v pack, you MIGHT even be able to squeeze the battery into the fuel tank area......there is a removable hatch for the fuel tank, so you could try it easily.
Don't worry too much about getting the CG towards the front of the recommended range....I balanced mine at 3.75" from the LE, the furthest back recommended in the manual, and it could definitely go back more without being unstable (I'm thinking from 1/4 to 1/2" more)

Mike
