Default ARF for windy days

I have been flying a SIG Senior and an LT40 but would like to have an ARF that would be a little more friendly on windy days
when the wind is 10/15 + and gusty
Our runway is North & South and the wind usually comes out of the East which makes for a tricky landing.
I sure would appreciate a recommendation for a good top wing ARF that likes wind

Thanks in advance Varmit

I flew a UCANDO 40 size in 15mph wind yesterday and it was a blast. The 60 size does good as well. Great price for either and a very fun plane.

I would recommend a Something Extra by SIG.

From the stand poing of controlability, yes. If you are in 20mph winds, then you need a big plane.

Great Planes Easy Sport. Handles wind very well, especially crosswinds on landing. I have a blast getting it to stand still into a heavy wind.

Are you a new flyer? In general, a low wing plane that are a bit higher in wing loading will handle wind better than a high wing/low wing loading trainer. The Tower Kaos would fit the bill well.

I like to fly my LT-40 in 15+mph wind. Really livens it up. Has never been a problem for me (but I learned how to fly in those winds, now I don't like still days).

I'll add another vote for the Sig Somethn' Extra. Mine flies great in the wind. Much better than the GP Extra 300S that I have.

Putting together a GP Spacewalker now. Hope that will be a good wind plane too.

I would think a Spad would be a little too light!

Thanks to all who replied ....I have decided to go with a GP Big Stick 60 powered by an OS 91FX.
Trainers are all that I have owned but a trusting member of our club let me buddy-box with his stick and I really like it.

Varmit,

You must fly at Tangerine. I had a Big Stick 60 with a os 61fx, it flew awsome.
You can really see that plane in the air.

Good luck

A Somethin Extra for sure, but don't forget an "Stick" either. Not pretty, but it doesn't mind the wind.

cfossa,
I had the great planes spacewalker. Excellent plane. Not fun on windy days. It got blown around like a leaf. If you want something to really keep you awake then it might do that on 15mph+ days!~)

Really? Gusty wind tosses my SE around like a ragdoll. It's a handful in the wind just keeping the wings level. What's your trick? Maybe it's the wind rolling off the treeline which is fairly close at www.smff.net field.

On the other hand, my H9 Aresti cuts through the wind like it's not there.

The GP Big Stick 60 is an excellent choice for windy conditions, varmit.

We have light winds in the A.M. here in Oregon but I had the chance to visit some fliers back in Wisconsin for a week earlier this month.

When the weather report says "winds, light and variable", better hold on to our hat!

We flew the GP Big Stick 60 and it was rock-solid in 25MPH winds (except at the top of a looping maneuver where it got blown downwind somewhat).

You ask the fellows from that windy area their secret for flying a plane in the wind and they all seem to say...."Just fly the plane". "Pilot errors---Wings not level, nose-up or down rather than level, etc. accentuate the wind"...."Flying in the wind makes you a better pilot".

All the flat-bottom trainers that were flown had aileron-rudder coupling and they flew almost as well.

Good choice, my friend.

Hey, you don't have tornados down there. You have "Hurry up canes!"

Joe,

Thanks. I was thinking it would be better in wind since it is bigger. I fly .40 sized planes (GP Extra 300S and Sig SE) now.

Thanks for the input,

Carl
