Bravo Matt.
Me too, I like flying in autumn and winter, especially when weather conditions are particularly extreme. it gives reflexes. Why miss fly by so beautiful afternoon?

Great building and flying job Mat. A very impresive job cutting the cowl. I look forward to seeing it next summer at the field (I am going into hibernation until April).
The photos by Papa Jeff look very good (Is he still using the Kodak Brownie Hawkeye? )

It is not likely.
This model has not been particularly popular.
It really is an awesome flying model....and one that has not been played out.
cheers,
George

RE: Great Planes Z-526 ZLIN Akrobat Build Thread
2-strokes have more difficulty with inverted installations due to the direct access the fuel has to pooling in the glow plug..This causes some issues at times...
4-strokes should run better when inverted do to the valves, and the offset glow plug in relation to the piston center...
If your carb doesn't do well inverted, then it doesn't matter if it is either 2 0r 4 stroke engine... It will raise your hair when your engine bogs and flames out....
I ran that same engine (st.51) inverted in a mustang, and seemed to run really well for me.... not issues with flame outs...
I also hade a os .46fx that I ran inverted, and it was also great...
I ran a magnum .91 4-stroke inverted and it would flame out when on idle even with onboard heat....
I couldn't get the carb to lean out properly when inverted....
Mounted it on it's side and never looked back.... ran great.
My examples went the opposite to what I advised.....Go figure....

Pulled it out last night....
Lots of wrinCles (my letter is not worCing on my Ceyboard// can you guess which one?)
I pulled the covering off the rudder (will need to recut the red stripe)
Funny thing about monoCote.....Once it is down and wrinCled....you can not shrinC it up liCe oracote.......
It will shrin some but the fine wrinles seem to remane....not that noticable but it is when up close...
One thing that can help is too inject H20 under the covering with a syrange and heat it up....
It will pull the covering away and then you can shrinC it down....
Doesn't always worC well though.... it does for fixing dents in balsa....
MonoCote is simmple to apply if you Cnow what your doing....
You have to apply it liCe a sticCer that doesn't shrinC much....
start in the middle and rubb outward from center...
Supperiour finnish...but don't follow directions from the manufacture....
Doesn't worC liCe they say it will....
Shame that the manufacture, doesn't even Cnow how to apply there own covering....
Funny...

The wing is definately heavy, and the aluminum joiner doesn't help a bit.
I've decided on electric power for mine. The fuel tank just sits too high in relation to the carb for my tastes...

I believe you misread that one guys....
It should read "This is my first airplane that I have owned that has a FOAM wing and balsa...."

Fenton have you flown yours yet? I've had an inverted OS 46AX and now a ST G51 at 90 degand have had no problems what so ever with the tank location, seems to work just fine. This plane really does fly great!

I'm still up in the air on a powerplant. I have a mag 52 four stroke, or an MVVS 40 with a mini pipe to choose from. I was originally gonna use a Saito 100 from another plane, but I really dont want to pull that one apart. Decisions, decisions...

RE: Great Planes Z-526 ZLIN Akrobat Build Thread
I am a little farther into the great white north . I have been flying off the snow with skis but the recent warm spell is
melting the field . I have time to start my GP Zlin build and am trying to decide what power plant to put in it .
It seems to be quite heavy for an OS 46 AX as used in the magazine reviews . I have an OS FS 70 II or a OS FSa 81
looking for places to live . Does anyone have any info on the total flying weight of their Zlin , with what engine ?
How did it balance out with that engine ? The 46AX is about 17.5 ozs. but the engines I am looking at are over 20 ozs..
I don't want to have to put lead in the tail and make the Zlin even heavier .

I just orderd one of these birds and was wondering what you wound up doing.
I have a 46AX ready to go, but was considering 4 stroke just cause, but the 55ax looks good as well.
Decisions, decisions.....

-s-
I haven't got an answer from anyone with a total weight or balance point yet .
I have been flying electrics indoors lately , and haven't started the build yet .
I like 4 strokes better when I have to mount the engine inverted . With an
overall weight listed at 6 3/4 lbs. I think a 70 to 82 4 stroke would be needed
to get the performance I am used to . I have a Goldberg Tiger II that weighed
in at 6 1/4 to 6 1/2 lbs . I tried an OS 46AX and then an OS SFa 56 and finally an
OS FSa 72 . It needed the 72 to get a good pull out of a hover . The Zlin looks
a little cleaner but also heavier .
I think an OS 55AX would be a good choice also , and might need less trimming
of that nice fiberglass . A side mounted 55 would need a lot of trimming but might
perform better .
drube
I would like to see pictures of the ST G51 side mounted .
Anyone had any problems with the landing gear coming through the wings ? I
fly from a rough grass field and prefer fuselage mounted gear for strength .
My copy of the Zlin has good tight covering for Monocote . The control surfaces
are the worst with the familiar wrinkles .
I hope to get to the Zlin soon but I have a GP Giant Stik and a DLE 30 that has
to be built for spring . It will be my first gasser .

Outlander, I didn't get a total weight but it balanced at 5 3/8" with battery against the tank using the G-51 and pitts. As far as the landing gear goes, I had a mishap,I was doing something I shouldn't have and crashed/splattered the plane on it's bellysnapping the fuse in half. The landing gear was bent flat aginst the wingsbut didn't go through the wings. It's fixed now but Iput the 46AX back in with a different cowl because the cowl for the 51 was unsavable. Me and my buddy were both surprised about how strong this plane is. Little damage considering the impact. IF for some reason this one doesn't fly correctly I will buy another. Had alot of compliments about it too, nice having something not many have.
Oh I fly mostly off grass too... No probs.
