Default Looking for the perfect arf for the Saito FA-90R3 radial

I just got a killer deal on a new FA-90R3 radial, and I'd like some advice on the perfect arf to put it in. I already have one in a H-9 Sopwith Camel, so that one's out. I've read where someone put one in a H-9 Corsair, but I don't know whether the cowl was big enough to cover the engine. I'd rather not butcher a cowl if possible. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I've read some posts on the Saito FA-90 radial. I noticed that the Saito Radial FA-90 doesn't
put out the power you might think. It only puts out the power of a single cylinder 50 size four
stroke. They also don't put the RPMs that a normal four stroke angine does. It might fit in the
cowl of the H9 Corsair but I don't think it will have the power to fly it.
That might be why you got a smoking deal on it.

The Saito 90R3 is 6 5/8" dia

The multi cylinder Saitos have a lot of low end torque

The 90R3 will pull a 14 X 6 two blade in the low 8's

Thanks. You wouldn't happen to know the diameter of the H9 Corsair cowl, would you?

I have a hangar 9 corsair with a 90r3. I have been flying this plane for 3 years with this engine. No the engine is not very powerful. My success is due to great effort with weight reduction in the plane. My plane weighs 7 lbs 10 oz without fuel. The engine uses almost no fuel!!! I have a 7 oz tank which will fly the plane over 10 min with 2 to 3 oz left over. Use hitech mini servos with metal gears. (HS81's). Light foam wheels etc. I do have a keleo ring for exhaust. The plane takes off in 20 feet on grass....really! It will do huge loops etc. A strong scale flying plane! The plane has weakness issues in the firewall and wing. Strengthen with CA not by glopping epoxy! This plane now has over two hundred flights on it.

I just bought a Saito 90R3 at a Black Friday sale for $519.00 and installed it in a Top flite AT-6 Texan ARf and flew it this weekend and boy do I love it. I had an OS91FX in it before, and it had plenty of power. The radial has a noticeable difference in power but as long as your putting them in a scale flyer you don't need brute power. The sound more than makes up for any short fall in performance. Also just put a Saito 170R3 in a Gee Bee Y and am very pleased with that as well. Once you hear that radial sound your hooked.

I was impressed with the fact I didn't have any issue rebalancing the plane after the Radial install. The Saito was only ten oz. heavier than the OS 91FX with mounts. So just installing the battery for the on board glow driver to the rear of the fuse opening it balanced perfect. Here is the pic I was looking for the other day.

That AT-6 looks great. What is the weight? I do not use onboard glow and have complete reliability. The retracts on my corsair have worked perfectly. I set them up carefully including greasing the rails, bellcranks and made sure the throws were exact. I only fly on grass. Definitely not POS. The early ones were not good in 2006.

Skysfallin, Here is what I have done to improve cooling to the 90-r3. As shown in the pictures I glued baffles made of two 1/8 sheets of balsa sandwiched together at 90 degrees to the cowel inside. Also the edge of the firewall was rounded to allow more air to leave the cowel. The third photo is my 30% yak 55 with a saito 325!

Maxam, that yak is awsome. How well does does it handle the weight? I know that engine is in the five pound plus range. Thats the engine I wanted to get and put in my Aero Works 50cc Yak but I didn't think it would have enough oomph. I know that sound makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Skysfallin, the Yak flies like a dream!!! Again weight should always be on your mind. I have carbon fiber LG, tube for wing and stab. The fire wall was shortened an inch along with the cowl. Micro servo for the throttle etc etc. The plane ready to fly is 16 Lbs. No it will not hover but neither will the real one. Takes off smartly and yes it sounds great. I have replaced the saito carb with one from OS to greatly improve the engine.

I have a question for anyone who has recently purchased a Saito 90r3. How was it packaged?

The reason I ask is I just got one and instead of the box having a nice foam insert (as my 170r3 did), it's just wrapped up in bubble wrap.

Thanks!
