Default Great Planes J-3 arf taxi test results

OS .46 FX
Slimline pits muffler
12 x 6 prop
no wing

Engine idle, 8 mph
Tail off ground, 10 mph
Unstable, 9 mph

Fliped her twice, first no dammage after tail lifted and refused to come back down (idle and full up elivator and it still stayed up), second broke the prop and scuffed the windshield. No biggie.

Hits: tracks nice and strait
fabric covering very strong (4' slide on pavement, no scratches)

Misses: Tail doesn't go back down after it lifts
Rolls too fast at idle

I'm building (assembling) one of these and I have a question about the engine selection.

Which is better the OS 46 or the 70 fs?

I know the answer is it depends, but what is your experience?

You can taxi test it with the wing on; just keep the throttle such that when the tail starts to come up, you chop it. It will taxi differently with the wing on, so it's a more usefull test that way. Also, your electronics aren't open to exhaust spray that way.

has way too much power. I have flown 2 of these my wive's and a friends and they both have OS 70 4 strokes in them, takeoff roll is 3 feet, flys around at 2 clicks above idle.

I have been flying mine with an OS FS-70. my experience is same as japan3d's. I would try a FS-52 or a 46X. I have the feeling that it can benefit from the lighter wight.

Default Cub

Look on eBay! I found a new Saito .60 twin cheap and put it in my GP Cub. Flies great with a cool sound and looks great with those 2 cylinder heads sticking out of the cowl on each side. Love it!

I flew a Hangar 9 80" Cub (similar in size and weight to yours) all last season on and MDS .40 2C. It had more than enough power to fly it quite nicely, especially after it had a couple gallons through it. I got a deal on a Saito 60T, so it's down to have the new engine installed.

Default .

i have same cub as yours with a ys-63 and ya need to fly it on the ground or you will ground loop for sure. i usually hold up elev till it just starts to lift off and then let go of elev and fly. usually in air after bout 10 -15 feet.... one of my fav planes and fly it all the time. i have actually worn out the front wheel hubs and am waiting for new ones now,

Default J3 Cub

Slopoke,

There is nothing that spoils my day more than seeing (and hearing) a Cub screaming around the sky with a 2-stroke turning 13 or 14 thousand RPM. If all you have is the 70 4-stroke use it and learn to use the throttle. Just my humble opinion.

I recall my planes being harder to taxi test without the wings on.. they kept groundlooping so much easier without the them IMO

Thanks guys for the input on the engine size.

I think I'll get a smaller fs to put on it. I don't think I could stand a 2c on this beautiful plane.
