BH Glasair 120
Would appreciate any information you might have for the Black Horse BH Glasair 120. I just purchased one from Hobby People and have not been able to find any reviews or others that have put this ARF together for building tips, thanks.

RE: BH Glasair 120
I fly one and did the review on Hobby People's website. I put a RCS 140 gas(21cc) engine in her. HItec 645mg through out. She balanced right where they said to put everythinng and she flies excellent. She tops off at 114mph by radar gun but will fly extremely slow. Great flying bird. I have no complaints

Well, I have just finished putting mine together. I powered it with a Magnum 120 FS, know it won't be a power house like yours but did read somewhere where someone used this same engine and he was pleased with the performance. Just curious, this plane does not look like it will glide very much, do you have to fly it down land?

Me and my Dad both have one of these. We live at about 4500 feet ASL. We were told to put a 1.80 four-stroke in it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a good size engine for this bird? For a 2-stroke, I was thinking about an O&S 1.20. A DLE-20 might not be enough. Any suggestions ?? Thanx. Rod

Hi Ricochet 59
I have one of these also. Thinking of putting an OS 120 2 stroke in it, should be plenty of power. I have a CRRC 26 that I may try to see how it fits. I don't want to hack up the cowl & ruin the clean lines. By the way how is the Spitfire doing?

Handyman 220,
What's cooking? The spitfire has been fixed. My dad fixed the vertical stabalizer and glassed the box up front. It will be a while before I get it put togehter. I'm having problems keeping planes in the air. Enigine quits, planes lands in the river, dumb thumbing, and etc. I need to get better before jumping to warbirds. Can't wait though.
Real recently I read a review in the Model Airplane News, Oct. issue on the BH Glasair. The reviewer used a Magnum 120 4-stroke for an engine. He said it flew scale at half-throttle. Rene3706's earlier post said he used the same engine. That is why I'm thinking that a Saito 180 might be too big. But what's the equivalent of a 120 2-stroke. At least a 150 4-stroke I would think. Maybe the Saito 180 would be okay. Don't know if it would fit all the way inside the cowl. Might have to check it out further. I'm thinking that the O&S 1.20 2-stroke might be the best choice.
Anyone have any ideas or further help???

Glad to hear you were able to fix it. If I were to put a 4 stroke in my Glasair I would use a 120, the plane itself doesn't weigh that much. In my opinion the 120 2 stroke is really to much for scale flying. I know most guys like to over power the aircraft rather than fly on the wings, just my opinion for what it's worth.

RE: BH Glasair 120
Thanks for the response, I will definately take what you said into consideration. Since we live at such a high altitude, I don't think the 1.2 2 stroke would be too much of an overkill. I still haven't decided on 2 or 4-stroke or gas. I'm open for options. My experience on the smaller planes is that the 4-strokes can sometimes stick out further, requiring a hole in the cowl. So I guess the next option is to start measuring and see what will fit in it. The old proverbial "throttle back" on overpowered engines might work. Even a Saito 150 at our altitude might be a good choice.
Hopefully more people with this Glasair will find this thread and can help out. Now that Hobby People is out of the Glasair, depending on wether they get anymore in, will affect the number of planes out there. Time will tell.

RE: BH Glasair 120
Regarding the cowl and engine size. I have not flown the Glasair yet, but did put a Magnum 120 Four Stroke. For those that want to minimize any holes in the cowl for the engine you would only need to remove a very small amount to clear the Valve Cover. I mounted mine sideways and was not as concerned about this so I opened the cowl up so I could use a standard NiCad Battery Satrter for the glo-plug instead of a remote.
