Model Tech Excite 90

Has anyone had any expirience with the Model Tech Excite 90? Are they a good flyer or not? They do look good in the ads.

Thanks, TME

After I submitted this post I noticeed the review of the Excite 90 right above it. Sorry about that.
Would like to hear from any others that have flown one.

Ed, Yes, I did see the review shortly after I submitted my post. I would still like to see more feedback.

Thanks, TME

Nice flyer! It flies VERY light still exploring the flight envelope. Webra Speed .61, 5.75 pounds. It will not handle rough handeling on the ground(hangar rash) it is a fragil airplane. Nice Flyer. I don't know why you need a .91 for this plane.

Tell me,
Did you actually fly it with a Webra .61?
I'm thinking of that plane, and the idea of a Webra seems very appalling (I have two of them).
If you do use the Webra - how is the engines acceleration and which prop do you use?

I have a unique situation in that I work weekends at a hobby shop and the owner is in the middle of an evaluation of this model for the store.

I was able to see the problems that the expert builder (not me) had and as he is a very particular builder he was put out a lot by the lack of quality in the fit of the parts, and at the same time another modeler at my field was assembling one as well:

Yes the belly pan does not fit right on both.

The tank position is way to high and will siphon because of it, as well as make the tuning of the needle next to impossible for a newer motor (new Magnum 91XLS and used Supertiger 90)

The firewall has no right thrust, but the cowl does have right thrust.

When the wing was originally bolted to the fuse and the normal checkpoints were used on the wingtips it showed that the wing was not correctly mounted. The builder removed the blind nuts and reset the wing to find out that the ailerons were badly offset compared to the fuse and that at prescribed deflection one of the ailerons was jammed against the fuse and had not achieved the proper movement.

Now all this being said I will say that the plane is a joy to fly (wing placed in the original position even tough it is a little out of align).

Both planes had to go through a lot of extra work to get things to work right for the engine:
The tank being so high in the fuse is a big problem in that the motor has to be set with the needle so closed that it will get too lean in hover and we actually had the insulator on a glow plug melt out from hover and inverted running. The Magnum was not damaged even though by all rights it should have been and yes I like the Magnums very well.

The Supertiger plane first had a Cline regulator (to eliminate the siphon) installed and it worked great with the cowl off, but there was not enough room under the cowl to allow the Cline to work correctly, so a Perry pump was installed (hangs below the cowl) and it works fine. I will say that this pilot also tried angling the motor a different way and had to end up getting another motor mount after all was said and done.

The Magnum plane was revamped by lowering the tank position and beefing up the nose a little to compensate for the wood cut out to allow the tank to come down to be inline with the motor carb.

Both planes have almost all of the bottom of the cowl removed to allow the motor try to cool. 100degree days have not helped here in S. Texas but that to will pass.

We are now working on the mixes to help with the roll couple and things like that, while smiling all the while as the plane is just so much fun to fly, even with all the problems above.

I have a Saito 100 in mine. You couldn't ask for a better combo than that!

i have this plane with an OS 90 FX. The light wing loading and long tail moment really make for a nice flier. Its really easy to hover and stable in a harrier. Up to speed it flies just like a pattern plane. So far, I've found it hard to do water falls and other tumbling maneuvers. Its my new fav.

I had an OS FX .91 in mine when it started life, but I had so much trouble with that engine (outlined elsewhere) that I bought the Saito.

It IS a great, stable flier, and I'm getting it dialed in to the point that I can hover it for longer periods of time, but like you Dave, it is practically impossible to do a waterfall! I have tried mixing elevator and flaperons to kick it over sharper, but it just won't tumble. It might be it's long moment preventing it.

Anyway, great fun and lots of flights with this plane. I still despise the covering, but it might be a good winter project to recover it with MonoKote.

Take care,

Dave

Yeah, i think its the long moment. i have a Goldberg Etreme 330 that waterfall like a champ. That's weird about your os. Mine ran perfectly right out of the box. I wonder if quality control in terms on consistency is an issue with this motor?

If you do a search, you'll find many people have problems with their FX 91s. It's just one of those things, well, one of those engines.

RE: Model Tech Excite 90

Yesterday I tried using flaperons. Wow! What a difference. I use a Futaba 9c which defaults to 50% on flaperon/elevator mix. i increased it to 80% and put in some expo. Now I get great waterfalls that are really stable. I can enter them right side up or inverted, it doesn't seem to matter.

RE: Model Tech Excite 90

Dave,
I'm a JR guy so by Flaperons do you mean that the ailerons move oppisite the elevator when you apply elevator control?
I took my Webra .61 out of my plane and installed a Magnum 91 in the plane It really rocks now. Almost scarry vertical. I have had flame outs with the engine at Idle in a tight dive recovery pulling to verticle. I suspect that it is the high tank location pushing too much fuel to the engine under the added G load so it loads up rich and quits.

Right...opposite of the elevator. I have the same problem as you, but different. Mine leans out in waterfalls. it hasn't quit yet, but that's only because I backed off. great flyin plane, though.

I have been waiting to see some post on this plane. I have one myself and I'm a 4 Stroke guy
So I put an OS 90 II 4 stroke in mine and I cut the bottom center out of my cowl you don't even notice it so it looks cool. I think the kit went together great yes there is the fit of the bell pan and the cowl having the angle in it and the motor not (BUT SO WHAT) this is one cool plane to fly
It will do all I want it to do and than some Rolling Circle no problem Water Falls, Blender, and The wall you name it. And talk about fly slow it will crawl. I'm so surprised I have not heard more about this great plane.
I just got a say I love this plane .(Maybe cause I fly Mode 1) Ha HA

Hey Michael, Is that a new stock color or did you change it? After reading the mixed comments here, I think I might have to get one of these anyway. I have a YZ FZ.91 that is not doing anything right now. I think it would be a good choice for this bird.

Thanks, TME

Try it you will like it. No that was the color that it came in I was surprised at it to in the ad
It look yellow not orange but I have got use to it I did fancy up the wing tips a little I have a friend that make decals and this is what he did I sure I will get good and bad comments but check it out. But I don't feel you will go wrong I started flying mine on duel rate like they said
And then I just change it all to full out slamin rates with 70% differential and that works for me
If you get one let me know how you like it

I was looking for a plane for a 91 saito 4 stroke how does this plane hover? does it knife edege do you think it is better than a ucan do3d or a funtana. im not sure which one to get, also how does it flatspin tx

RCSM
Your 91 would be a good choice for the Excite 90 The wing Root is about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4
This lets this plane fly reel slow I feel it will Hover great I'm not as good on that maneuver as allot of flyers but I can do all the other cool stuff. One of the guys have a Funtana with a 91 four stroke and I think it's too much. One of the cool things about the Excite is you can get in trouble and as long as you can get the wings level it will just about stop in midair and give it a little throttle off it goes. It take vary little rudder for knife edge and would be better with coupling. The last couple of time I have flown the Excite it has been vary windy and you can point it in the wind and pull back on the throttle and it will fly backwards.
I just love this plane

I have a Magnum 1.08 sitting on the shelf. Would this be to much engine for this plane??? What is the torque rating on the servos you guys are using???

Dru.

RE: Model Tech <span class=

Well my thinking was that a 90 2 stroke should have way more power than a 90 4 stroke
Model Tech Recommends a small block 2 strokes 90. I fly mine with a 90 4 stroke and it kicks ass. I not sure about 1.08 but it should do fine with throttle management. I'm using
JR 537 servos I think there 40oz .I will tell you that this is a plane I think is being over looked buy allot of flyers out there. One of the things that most everybody over looks is how a thick airfoil can make a different in just how slow you can fly. The Excite 90 is all most 3" it will crawl. Buy it put your 1.08 in it and have a blast
Michael

RE: Model Tech <span class=

Cool!! That was one of the fastest responces I have ever had. I know the 1.08 is a little bigger then the 90 so I will break out the shoe hornns and hammers to get it in the slim looking nose.

I was thinking of using servos rated at some where around 60oz plus. I worry about the size of the surfaces and the torque of the servos.

Dru.

The MT Excite 90 is a real sleeper here on RCU ...not much text about it good or bad...kinda surprized by the lack of info on it. For the price and what little I have read here on RCU it warrants a closer look for sure. I dang sure can't build and cover one for that price.
I have a feeling if one more plane works it's way into my shop I am going to need an add on... for my bed:eek:
