U CAN DO 3D .60
I just ordered a ucd 3d size .60 with a saito 125 fs , My rx im using is a spectrum 8000. What servos would be good for this plane?
Thank you |
RE: U CAN DO 3D .60
In my old one, I used HiTec 625MG's so look for something around those specifications or better.
I still have mine sitting in my shed. Hasn't been flown for a long while but it was a fun plane to fly (Same engine you are using - the Saito 1.25) By memory, I used 15/6 APC props on mine. Make sure you iron the covering down well. |
RE: U CAN DO 3D .60
I keep looking at these as a possible inexpensive 20cc gas powered project for sport and 3D. Knowing you have some time on yours, wondering about your thoughts regarding a gas powered version?

ORIGINAL: ahicks I keep looking at these as a possible inexpensive 20cc gas powered project for sport and 3D. Knowing you have some time on yours, wondering about your thoughts regarding a gas powered version? I have recently rediscovered the benefits of resurrecting some of my smaller planes and was looking at my UCD a couple of weeks ago and trying to decide if I could be bothered fixing the covering (It is VERY tired and a lot of the trim has fallen off it) I then got to thinking about making it a Gasser. Bearing in mind that the plane flies 3d very well on a Saito 1.25 and is reasonably acceptable on a Saito 1.00 I think that a decent 20cc would be good on it. The DLE 20 would be a very good choice as it would fit pretty much straight in. Some of the weaker 26cc's would also work well but they tend to be a bit heavy and bulky. By using a smaller fuel tank, Using an IBEC and locating the ignition a little way back, the weights should be fine and the CofG should also be far enough back to 3d well. I have a spare Evolution/Mvvs 26cc Gasser that I may install just for kicks but I can't use an IBEC on that as it requires more battery power for the ignition. It may be a bit heavy and it may be a bit much power for it but there is always a throttle I can use. |

Did you use the 625mg all the way around? Or did you just use it on the rudder? I want to set it up right the first time.
Thank you |
RE: U CAN DO 3D .60
I used 625's all the way round and they were plenty of power.
I also know some people are having good results with the Savox servos but I am not familiar with their model numbers etc. Another thing I did with mine was to use 4/40 pushrods (made from 4-40 threaded rod with some carbon tube glued over them) as the ones supplied (I guess they were 2-56) were a little flimsy for high throws for 3d'ing. I will take mine down from the shelf tonight if I get home in time and see if there are any other mods I remember doing to it. |
RE: U CAN DO 3D .60
Perfect I got 6 of them 625s on there way 2 day shipping so i can get this together this weekend. The plane and engine will be here thursday. I also ordered Robart 1/8 hindges to .
|
RE: U CAN DO 3D .60
Regarding engines, guess I was thinking one of the newer generation beam mount 20's to keep the weight to a minimum, power to weight maximum? DLE, or name your poison. I have a DLE in a profile, love it, but have room in the stable for another. Think I'm going to try the RCGF 20 beam mount to see what they're about on whatever I go with. I'm comfortable providing/prefer doing my own service work, so as long as parts are available, I'm good to go.
What about prop clearance? Flying off grass, is there room for a 17" prop or would I be forced to go 3 blade? Regarding metal gear servos and HD linkages, I'd recommend them highly on something like this. I used both on the profile (67" Fusion) and I've seen this plane's tail surfaces fluttering in the sunlight, yet it continues on with no apparent damage! Gotta love something that handles that! |
RE: U CAN DO 3D .60
Just a thought. You must reinforce the Landing Gear Block . It is weak point , especially if you fly off grass field and have added flying weight.
|
RE: U CAN DO 3D .60
That is absolutely correct about the Landing Gear block.
I fibreglassed mine in but some well placed tri-stock is also a good option. I had a look at mine last night and decided to give it a revamp. Still deciding on whether to keep it glow or go to Gas power (or even Electric could be fun but the replacement of batteries may require me to add a hatch, not a problem if I am taking the covering off anyway). I have a very lightweight prototype 23cc that I made a couple of years ago and it would work well (Might be too much power though - it turned 18/6 props easily) On mine, I also Pinned the firewall with some toothpicks, added a little reinforcing at the back of the canopy area above the wing saddle (Can't remember why I did that) and used larger wheels because we also flew off grass in those days. Yes, any of the current beam mount 20's would be fine to use as they are narrow enough to fit well. The landing gear would be ok for a 17" prop but not much larger. I have a few alternatives here that I could put on mine to make it taller. It will probably become a Winter Project for me (It is summer here right now) and I will have it as a "throw it in the car and go" plane. |
RE: U CAN DO 3D .60
Well I just got mine delivered! I will upload some pics later. The servos and hindges will be here tomorrow. you say you installed toothpics on the firewall? how did you do that?

When I got some of the parts out,I found the cowl was cracked on both sides. I called Great Plains and they didnt question it at all. So they are sending me a new one. Good news! When the woman got home from work she was impressed. I thought that was good, because were about two weeks away from our due date. Cant wait for my new little pilot to get here!! P.S it's a little girl! http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../thumbs_up.gif
|
