UCD may she RIP!

I finally got the cg back where it needed to be.
great inverted flat spins. It look like it was actually climbing!!!
I was hovering lower than usual for me (about 20 to 30 feet) thats when my YS said NO. The ground jumped up a hit my plane.
No air speed and to much elevator. (3D rates) OH s***! It is a 91 FZ with a YS plug and about 2 gallons of Powermaster 20/20 through it. While hovering for a short time (about 15 to 30 seconds) it has a habit of just quiting. What wrong, maybe I should use 30% heli fuel. The engine runs great, except in the hover.

Oh well, another UCD 60 will be born out of a box tomorrow!

oh boy - we have had a similar experience 4 times on low hover the engine a 91fx just loads up a quites but and i say but because every time i had just enough time to slam in full down elevator before hitting the ground and so far no damage but for a bent landing gear and a scared prop or two, when we look at yours i just say touch wood.

"She hit the ground so hard that dust flew out of the transmitter!"

Bummer, sorry for your loss. That's happened to me one too many times. The last time, an engine overheated / locked up and the prop flew off at about 40 feet. There isn't much you can say but awww...ohhhhhh :)

You really should take the time to strap that ground down next time! :D

For the looks of the pictures.. it seems that the uCD abc certainly be repaired...!!! Yes i said the dirty world :)
The fuse is clean and the wing has a couple of bays broken.. do you plan on repariting ot or ditching it?...
IF ditching.. too bad I am so fr away....

I'll keep the wing and cut of the tips on both sides
and save it for my new one.
As for the fuse, I don't know!
Just picked up my big box of shinny new UCD parts.
It should be done in a few days;)

Hey Dirk,
Too bad about the UCD!! After extended hovering and burping the throttle , its hard to say why the YS failed. My OS 91 Pump does pretty good , but I feel that it is slightly underpowered for 1/2 throttle hovering. The annoying thing is that it climbs out with only a few more notchs of power... gotta experiment with some different props.Good luck with UCD Act Two!

I hate to hear that you had a problem with your YS 91. I am putting the same combo together now to take the place of my WM Fun 3D that had an OS 160 FX in it and I ran it out of fuel at about 15'. Couldn't recover. I will be watching to see if I have the same problem as you.
Where did you end up with as far as the CG. and how much throttle did you need to hover?

Same thing happened to my Giles today...damm hiccup in the fuel line...I guess...Zero airspeed, 3D rate...inverted flat...hello terra firma...!
That's OK, got 4 mo planes NIB to choose from.

I don't know where my final balance ended up, I was still experimenting with it (It is hard to tell with the fuse in TWO pieces) It did hover at half throttle with 20/20 fuel and a
APC 16 4W. Boy did that prop sound great.
I think I found out why my YS would die in hover, fuel clunk was to long and resting on bottom of tank while hovering.

I made some improvement in UCD #2
1. Pinned Fire wall
2. Moved both elevators to be exact opposite of each other (Made spacers)
3. Moved pull pull rudder servo back farther ( to reduce tail weight need to balance
4. Made a bracket to make it easy to add or remove tail weight ( to suit my style of flying for that day)
5. Reinforced wheel paint with glass cloth and thin ca
6. Robart hingepoints on rudder
6. and anything else I can think of as I go along

I will post pictures soon :D

Is it possible that your engine is overheating in the hover? Perhaps mounting it sideways and getting the cylinder more air might help. Know how it looks but......... Just a thought.

Does anybody think that "3-D" is a marketing ploy to sell more planes?

we are for sure in the fashion business so yes all the hype about 3d is getting to much, but must say it's pushing the flying envelope and we have not had this much flurry of planes and new models for years.

My U Can Do 2 flies great.;) I have been flying without the wheel pants and cowl
balanced at 5.5 inches with out the tail weights. Climbing inverted a flat spins and water falls are starting to look good. ( just started 3d) I changed to 30% heli fuel with no dead sticks so far. Now that I added the wheel pants and cowl I need to put a hatch behind the wing (it is above the fuel tank on the CG now) so it will balance @ 5.5 without the tail weights. Than when I feel lucky add the tail weight to balance @6" Watch out TOC here I come
