Thanks for the info. I've sanded the tires also, and they are just not going to work. I'll take your suggestion and go with smaller ones. I have the Saito 180 which looks like it will work very well. I do need to find an exhaust extension of about 1" to get it behind the cowl. I looked on Horizon but don't really see anything like that. Any idea where I might find one? Hey everyone. I am going to get a gp gee bee this summer sometime. I will get the robostruts also. I have been thinking a lot about engines. I want this airplane as light as possible and here are my thoughts. the os 1.20 fs is 33.3oz. with muffler (tower hobbies). so this is the recomended engines weight, 33.3 oz. what if i use the saito 125 that only weighs 24.7oz (with muffler). That is nearly 10 oz. less! My question is this, for those that have already built or are currently building the gee bee now, how does the balance come out with the recomended engine weight of 33.3(i know the saito 180 is about that). now can't i use the very light saito 125 and put the battery on the firewal if need be? i have got to believe that i have the room in a gee bee's fusalage to move some serious weight around and balance this plane with out addidng any additional ballast. that would be ideal (IMO) to get this plane light and nearly 10 oz. saved in engine weight is alot in my book for this size plane. I love the look of the gee bee r2 and i have got to have one. I just want it light to lower the wing loading as much as possible (read: to make it easier to land) any suggesstions or ideas would be great!

well that was my thoughts, the fuse is so big that its not like i will have any trouble finding room to move components around. there is plenty of room on the firewall to install the battery high and dry above the engine it loks like.

Hello all, Well Took the Geebee up for her first flight and all went well. The landing requierd a little throttle and she came rite in (15 times) no problem. I belive the lateral balanceing of this model is very important to avoid problems on landing at slower speeds - Steve

Landing is the hard part. (i've heard) Flies great with half a wing... still, a little harder to land that way.

HI all,
Well after numerous flights I still have had no problems with my GB. I am using an OS 120 with pump, Mcdaniel onboard glow, I noticed that I have my wheel boots mounted more forward then most people, I believe this allows them to be more forgiving on landings when the wheels move forward on impact as they do not hit the pants. Anyway I can say this thing is by far my most enjoyable plane to fly (IT.S A BLAST) It just looks so cool in the air and when it lands. I will upload pics when I have them - Steve |

Quick question... I'm thinking of cutting the wood ring for the cowl and just trimming the fiberglass to accommodate the muffler on the Saito? I don't think it would hurt it that much, and maybe add a little added air flow. It looks like I would need to cut about 2 1/2" off the back side to get around the muffler. I really wish there were more options for fitting mufflers or extensions. I tried the "flexible tube" on my Spacewalker / saito 120 and it sounded aweful! (65 Impala with exhaust leak and missing muffler)

I have the muffler of my Saito 180 tucked in the trough like in post 378, except without the rubber exhaust extension and that has worked fine for me. I also had to grind a hole in the firewall so the pressure nipple wouldn't rub. I haven't seen anybody do what you are proposing. If you go ahead with that, I'd probably reinforce the cut-out in the fiberglass with some plywood backing to prevent flexing and cracking around the muffler.

Hi Devcos, Well I love my bee. On my OS 120 with pump I had to rotate the motor about 4 degrees and install a dubro rubber extension the pipe fits perfect. Anyway I would hold off and look for a machine shop in your area or a freind who could bend the pipe a little to get a correct fit. Although the way it looks it would be coming out the bottom and not take away from looks or structural integridy, WOW wait till you get this baby in the air. I can't get fly enough. It's the first plane in a long time that I don't get tired of flying. - look forward to some final pics - [size=2]OH how do you like all the U-CAN-DOS HE HE - Steve

Well I thought that I had an engine for the Gee Bee.
Its missing one roller for the rod big end and cannot find out what motor it is to order parts. Apparently it is a conversion of a weed eater or chain saw motor. Converting it to glow and milling some excess weight off the weight of complete converted engine with prop adapter and all is around 35oz. The size is about 36cc so will probably never need full power so should be able to run it on just methonal and oil. AUW looks like 12lbs.
