Seagull Extra 300S
 

Hey you guys I'm thinking about getting the 60 size extra 300 from seagull. I will be running it with a saito 91S. If anyone has this plane, I would appreciate some feedback. Thanks!

hey there,

I've been flying a seagull extra 300 for two years, but not without some mods. The landing gear seems to be placed too much behind, so when taxiing she'll put her nose down.
First aff all check the firewall for strength.
The two separate elevators are joined using a metal piece, that's fine but where the metal goes in the elevator it started to worn out on my extra. I cut it out and glued two pieces of multiplex on both side of each elevator. I also replaced the plastic quicklinks with metal ones.
Reinforce the front of the fuselage where the wing sits in, it's a bit weak.
Last but not least, that's why my extra crashed. check the plates that hold the servos in the wing.
Mine where not glued in properly and one came off in a snapp-roll.
I't s easy to fix or to check these things..
Two of my clubmembers also bought the extra, didn't check it or reinforce it and they both crashed there planes. One elevator problem, the other lost it's wing.

Don't panic. If you spent some time in your extra it is a real beast to fly.
Knife edges, inverted ... it's a pleasure to fly it really!!!

Looks like the Extra is brother to the Edge. I had/have an Edge and the fus broke in front of the wing at the former on the 2nd landing. clean break everything in front of the wing in one piece, evert thing from the wing back in another, easy fix, but it did p--- me off.

hello !

So you experienced it also.
I'm now working on a sportstar 60 3D from phoenix models.
I've made the tailsection a lot stronger simply by adding an extra spar in the fuse.
And off course several little changes to make it stronger.
I'm really getting sick off ARF's that really aren't save to fly !!!
OK if it brakes during a crash, but not when pieces start coming off in the air.
Aren't manufacturers aware that this can lead to serious accidents...


Next time I'll go back to a building kit (if they still sell them, in Belgium most off the shops sell ARF's and kits dissapear. such a shame)

Anyway fly those planes, that's what they're made for

I have found that most if not all ARF's are weak at the landing gear and the fire wall. I would recommend pinning both with dowel rods to strengthen them.

Hi

I built the Seagull 300S ARTF last year for .46 -.53 size engines which is an excellent model to assemble and fly. The .60 you refer to must be its new big brother as I've not heard of it. Sounds interesting!

I was looking at this plane earlier this year, and trying to compare it to the Graupner Extra 300s ARF and the Vector Flight Extra 300s ARF, all of which are about the same size and about the same price. They all look very similar, though to me the Graupner looked like the better of the three. I never could make a final decision on them and went with the .60 Extra 300s kit by Great Planes as recommended by Minnflyer. I really was looking for a kit anyway. I'd be curious as to your research and as to the comments by anyone else that may have specific experience that might allow comparison of these models head-to-head.

If you fast forward to page 8 on this section there is a summary of my Seagull 300S ARTF review which I did on another forum. I built/assembled this model early last year and fitted an Irvine .46 which gives good performance. At less that £90 it's an attractive budget priced model that flies well!

I have owned and flown the extra 60 for about 5 weeks and must say the quality of the whole kit was great.

i replaced the tank thought as the one that is supplied is only an 8 Oz it was replaced with a 12Oz, This gives me 15 Mins with an Irvine 61( What an engine) it pulls my extra vertical untill you can no longer see it(WOW).

One problem i Have is the when i pull up hard in to vertical the model screws hard out to the right i belive this is because the whole of the elevator is twisting. but apart from that the kit is GREAT.
