Sig Rascal 110
I am presently assembling a Sig Rascal 110 . . My buddy has a Rascal 110 that he has about 10 or 15 flights on . He was flying it yesterday and it started to behave differently to aileron input so he brought it in and discovered one of the aileron linkages was missing . This was caused by having threaded couplers on both ends instead of a soldered link on the one end and threaded on the other . I realized mine was the same and decided I would just make sure to solder the one end to prevent that from happening . This plane is slow on the ailerons and its quite noticeable when you lose one . . For anyone with a Rascal 110 it might be a good idea to check your aileron linkages to see if you have threaded couplers on both ends and if you do solder one to prevent it from being able to vibrate itself off ..

bikerbc,My Rascal 110 is an older 1st generation version without flaps. I just checked and it has a solder on clevis on one end of each aileron links with the other end being a 4-40 threaded type. These are as supplied by Sig. The assembly manual also references (pages 7 & 8) using a solder on link on one end and the 4-40 threaded one on the other end of the aileron push rod. Does your assembly manual show a solder type on one end as mine does, or does it show it show a threaded type on both ends? I know yours is the new current version plane.

The manual refers to a solder link but only provided threaded clevises and rods with threads on both ends .Its no big deal as long as you solder one of the threaded clevises on .

You're right that one end must be soldered on. It's a good point for those who are assembling one of these with the wrong parts being provided. Your friend didn't catch it building and found the problem in flight! These are wonderful flying big birds and I would hate to see someone loose one because of wrong parts. Good post! P.S. Thanks Larry . I am putting a ASP 160 twin in mine , my buddy has a OS 180 in his . The 180 really yanks it around the sky but it is pretty thirsty . His flights are only 8 mins tops . What do you have in yours ? I am thinking a OS120 or a DLE 20 might be good matches . I haven't run this ASP twin yet but I have run the Gemini Twin in a 1/4 Cub .

I have a Saito 120 in mine. For my style of flying it provides all the power I need and then some. Short take offs, EZ safe climb outs, and throttled back scale like cruising. Not to mention the great 4 stroke sounds! Your ASP twin will do all that too plus have the cool factor of a cylinder head sticking out each side of the cowl (J-3 style).:cool: Don't know what else you could wish for!!

I just tried soldering one end of myLinkages up and they wont take solder . The solder will stick to the clevis but not to the link . Its a flat black wire material .. I will replace the works with 4 40 push rod blanks cut to length with a solder on clevis on the one end and a thread on with a jam nut on the other end . I thought this was going to be easy ..

I have it now , I replaced them with 4 40 push rods cut to length .. Now I am going nuts trying to get the flap system working properly ..That always screws me up . . Do you mix any rudder in with your ailerons like is common practice on Cubs? My buddy did that on his Rascal the other day . I don't think it needs it myself but I haven't enough stick time on one yet to really know .What little flying I have done it seemed to me to track very well .The tail followed well in the turns . I think he may have just wanted to experiment . Cubs on the other hand really like to drag their tails . You can either use your thumb constantly or be lazy and mix in some rudder.. I put mine on a switch so I can have it both ways .

Adding nuts to the linkage, and butting them up to the clevis, is a common way to solve this problem. I usually double nut the clevis.

Tom my buddy had his put together with the jam nuts and metal clevis's however with the vibration put out by the Saito 180 they came loose and unwound. The metal clevis's turn to easily to take a chance even with jam nuts .. I like the looks of Zippi's set up with the plastic clevis's . I think they would have less of a chance of undoing themselves. That's a very nice looking set up that I will keep in mind ..I will do that myself next time . Zippi is that sleeve made from aluminum fuel tube ?

On my rascal I don't have any aileron to rudder mixing. It isn't needed. It's electric with a ten cell at 70 amps brushless. Goes vertical at under half throttle but cruises beautiful. It flies so much better than a cub in my opinion. My other one had a os120 and flew very well on that engine. Was going to put a asp160 in it but a friend talked me out of it he other rascal

Where did you find the Carbon Fiber Tubing ? Pschulte could you tell me what your friends reasons for not wanting you to use the ASP 160 ? I have an OS 160 Gemini Twin in a 1/4 scale Cub and I really like it . I am hoping the ASP 160 will be as nice an engine .

Mine also is the first generation with no flaps. I have a DLE 30 and rarely fly it above half throttle and we are regularly above 7000' density altitudes. And its a floater. |

We are having our 5th Annual Rascal 110/Bigbird event on September 6th & 7th. I think Mike Gretz and some others from SIG may be attending this event again this year. Two years ago SIG announced our club was picked as having the most Rascal 110's at one single event. I think we had 13 or 14. A buddy of mine and myself put this event on every year and it's always a blast. You guys come on down and join in on all the fun. I ran the first tank of fuel thru my ASP 160 yesterday , it seems like its going to have lots of power and it sounds pretty cool. It sure idols down with the glow driver system on . Now its on to the flap system .

Well I am all ready for the maiden ..The balance worked out perfect with the batteries right on the C of G .. You can get luckier than that .

Good luck with the maiden bikerbc. My friend didn't get the 160 because I am going to put it in a sig fourstar 120. It was originaly in a sbach and ran quite well. Just wasn't the right engine for that plane. It will be great in the rascall.

You could always z bend the end that goes in the servo arm.. thats what I do.
