What Engine For WACO 30??

Hi

What Four Stroker would suit the Waco 30?

Also what Servos?

Thanks

Ray

RE: What Engine For WACO 30??

Do you have the Global waco 30 ARF ? if so it's a neat little plane. I watched one fly last weekend, not sure what servos he had but he used the Magnum 30 4 banger for power. looked to have pleanty of power for "scale" type flying, vertical was not unlimited but it had enough for Hammerheads and such. if it were me that Magnum 30 and some HS-225's on A/E/R Hs-81 for T would be the ticket. for more power try the Magnum 52 4 banger and standard BB servo's, I think it would fly"heavy" with the extra 1/2 pound in it though. CG may also be a problem with the 52.

You could go with OS or Saito 40 for a little more power than the 30. Hobby People has the Waco 30 ARf for 99.99 and the Magnum 30 for 99.99 this week.

Thanks Carrell & John
After your advise have gone to Hobby People at 99.99, what a great price.

For this beauty i have ordered the New Saito .40a Four Stroke this should prove ok.

Servos, i was thinking of Hitec, would the Standard ones be Ok?

RE: What Engine For WACO 30??

I am finishing up the Waco 30 as we sit here. (well I would be if I wasn't in here typing) I used the OS Wankel engine in mine but the plane was designed around the Magnum .30. I am putting HS81's all around for servo's. 5 of 'em 'cause the wings take two. The plane came out very tail heavy with the engine mounted in the stock location so I moved it forward as far as I could and balanced it on the aft CG. The hinges that ship with the kit are very stiff after I glued them in place so I think If I were you I would swap 'em for some after market ones. CA hinges are fine but the ones that come with this kit are the cheap round ones and very stiff. I should get a test flight in on mine thursday (I hope ) Good luck with yours.

By the way Ray, the wing requires Micro servos like the Hitec HS81's the instructions say you can use standard servo's for everything else but it will be very very crowded in there if you do. I am struggling just to find a place to mount the switch.

Well I finished the little rascal last night. When I got home from work tonight I gassed it up and decided to break in the engine. Man! Thant little Wankel is going to make this plane a rocket and an acrobatic fool! Sounds like a hornets nest at full throttle and amazingly enough transitions very smoothly. I drove it around the yard for two tanks of gas and I can tell you it has a ton of power for this plane. Holding it up I'm guessing I could hand launch it vertically at about 2/3 throttle. OS recommends a 9-6 for a break in prop so that is what is on the plane right now. I don't have a tach so I can't say what kind of RPM it's turning but judging by the sound it must be 16K or more. Once it breaks in it should swing a 10-6 just fine.

Hi Steve
Thanks for the info.

Would like to see some pictures!!!

HS 81MG in the Wings, would this be ok?

How about your undercarriage? some say Carbon Fibre.

Thanks

RE: What Engine For WACO 30??

Ray,
The Hs 81's should be fine for the wings ( hope so as that is what I am using) and I am using HS81's with nylon gears for everything else. As to the landing gear I just put the stock ones on mine but I can tell you they are very weak. I am sure the plane is going to bounce if you don't set it in just right and won't take any kind of a hard landing with the stock gear at all. The wheel pants are junk, I went ahead and put 'em on but one of them is already cracked just from taxiing around in the yard. I dunno where you would find carbon fiber replacement fear but that would be a good option if they were available.

I really hope the wind quits blowing here pretty soon as I am kinda anxious to fly this thing. It's the smallest plane I own but I'm sure it is gonna be a blast. I took a bunch of pictures of it tonight and I'll try and post a few tomorrow. Don't wanna sound stupid but I always let the wife do the camara thing and I dunno how to get them outta the camara and onto the computer. She's already went to bed sooo......

Naaah, It's about 2 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide as it is mounted. In order to get the CG right I had to build a bigger mounting block then the engine itself!

Is that the only size its avaliable in? It would be cool as hell in a .40 or .60 size.

Miloh.

RE: What Engine For WACO 30??

Only size listed on the web page. I agree with you though it would be a great engine for something like the Sukoi or a Stearman. Seems to produce a ton of power too. It didn't have any compression when it came out of the box but after 4 tanks of fuel it is getting much better. The big problem is the price. It lists for around $350. I got mine from the local hobby shop for around $260. but I think he gave me a pretty good deal 'cause they had had it for a while. The way these engine manufacturers price their stuff, a .60 would probably run around 500-600 bucks.

Hey, Steve:
I'm interested in a Wankel, mostly for the novelty, but a viable alternative to to ol' 2 strokes. I understand it really sucks the fuel. Maybe you could shed some light on this for me. Also they're supposed to be very messy. The power is very impressive, tho, 1.27 BHP as advertised. Maybe they could be put into a larger plane. What do you think? The price is prohibitive but what the heck, you're only going around once.

Thanx for any perspective.

RE: What Engine For WACO 30??

Jackster, Mine makes a ton of torque, turns a 9X6 about 16K and sounds like a hornets nest at full song. It has a puke tube like a 4 stroke and does seam to put out a lot of oil over the bottom of the plane but then it's not really broken in yet. as to whether it will fly a larger plane? Can't really tell you as I have broken 4 props in 5 atempts to fly it and dead sticked on the 5th try. I don't really attribute this to the engine, more to the short coupling of the Waco 30 airframe. I think the deadstick was a fuel delivery problem as I am using a great planes fueling valve that I have my doubts about. Gonna remove it before the next attempt. The engine makes enough power that it feels like it would take off right out of my hand if I would let it but bipes need a certain amount of airspeed to fly so I don't think that is an option.

SO whats happening with the 30 size waco? I want one to match my 60... Any one who has one and flys it.. tell me about it?

RE: What Engine For WACO 30??

I have one and have not been too impressed. I have a OS .26 in it and can tell you it is very underpowered. I'd put a 40 4 stroke or 32 2 stoke. It will fly decent when in the air, but take offs are long and with this short coupled airframe it is a handfull on the ground. Landing is challenging not to nose into the dirt. Keep the tail planted on landing the best you can. You can forget touch and goes. Cant get it to do much with the OS, but a bigger engine would probably make it shine. Frame is built well and It really looks good. I have moth-balled it to the wall "looks nice" catagory.

The mag 30 4stk has it all over the OS26 power wise OS has now taken it to a 30. I decided
to put a 40 saito in mine not yet in the air but static thrust seems quite good,I dumped the pants
and went to larger wheels for a grass field

RE: What Engine For WACO 30??

I started mine with a 25 2-stroke and it was not at all impressive but I ended up picking up a OS 40 4-stroke and it was a new plane, Mine is my avitar.

Ther is very little difference in the .26 or .30 . It was just market pressure OS went to the .30. Neither is going to fly this plane well. MORE POWER SCOTTY!

I've been looking for an engine for my Waco 30 and if any of you are interested there are 2 Wankel's up for auction on ebay. I'm going to use an os 40 or saito 40.

After putting the OS 40 in your Waco 30 how did the CG come out. I'm deciding between the saito or the OS 40. The OS is a little heavier then the saito. If I have to add weight to the nose of a plane to get right CG I usually gowith a larger battery or go to a larger engine that will fit. Has anyone seen the saito and OS side by side for sz difference.
